Is Crosby Jewish?

I know, I know, a bit of an odd question.

However I do know someone with the last name Crosby who is Jewish, so I was wondering if it was the same deal with Sidney.

Given the, uh, limited number of Jewish hockey players I think it would be neat to have a player of this stature be Jewish.

Crosby isn't a Jewish name, so chances are he isn't, but there are plenty of Jews with non Jewish last names (like me), so you never know.

I'm not jewish, but as far as I know it's passed along from the
mother's side. If the mom is jewish, s/he is jewish. Since in most
western societies the lastname is given from the father's side, someone
with a jewish mother and a non-jewish father is jewish, but doesn't

That is correct. In the Jewish religion, if the mother is Jewish, the child is considered Jewish as well.

Mike Cammalleri's mother is Jewish, so as is he.

That could be the case with some, but that is not the case with all (including me). When my family came to America from the old country (I say "old country" because I am not sure which country it was, exactly), their last name was long, complicated, and very hard to pronounce for the immigration officers at Ellis Island, so they changed the name (Klakarzki, or something like that) to a much shorter version (Clair). A lot of people think I am French-Canadian (which I am not) and no one ever thinks I am Jewish (which I am).

seems to me the jewish population in nova scotia exists in small #'s outside of halifax. In my town which was a booming coal town for decades there are very few jews left Most of them lretire and move to Halifax or Montreal.

Mattieu Schneider is Jewish. When he played for the Leafs he never played on high holidays.
