It's gotten better now that I hooked up directly to the modem instead of through a third party router.

This is going off a verizon hotspot in the room next to me, with my laptop, xbox 1 downloading NHL 17 and my dads Roku connected to to it. Im pretty stoked because I was lucky to get 10mbps before because of where I live.

I'm currently unable to get the 200 mbps plan because they only offer it with unlimited data if you have a video package.

American broadband companies are the best right?

Set up is an Arris SB6183 and a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 with everything wired but the streaming devices.

Got Cox. Had to go with the slower 2.4 GHz because my computer's Wi-Fi couldn't reconize the 5.0 GHz. Here's the results:

It is what it is.

Strange that my dad (who owns the house) ordered the 300MBps internet speed, yet my internet download is capped at less that 30MBps. And the upload is higher than my download. Strange. :amazed:

Are you sure it's 300 megabytes(capital B) and not megabits(lowercase b)? If the service is megabits that is 100% normal as a bit is 1/8th of a byte so max would only be 37.5 megabytes/s. Due to everyone and their brother streaming everything there is generally a higher load on download versus upload so that's not out of the norm especially at peak hours.

I should be getting ~940. Speedtest.net's results are consistently slower for me. When I test against Google Fiber's speed test page, I get around 720. Netflix's fast.com seems to be capped at around 170-200.

EDIT: Here's The Google Fiber speed test results:

My bad, it's Megabits. My mind is going. :naughty:

Paying $30/month. I had to play hardball with the ISP to get them down to that price, however.

My wifi in my house is almost non-existent and I've bought repeaters, etc. and feel like I've tried everything. Any suggestions or resources I can use?

If you have repeaters, or more than one access point, you will need to lower the broadcast power of each so that they don't overlap too much. Otherwise the signals will collide into each other (literally) and you may have a lot of packet loss.

I have two APs, one on each end of the house. Not until I changed them to 25% and 10% broadcast power did my signal improve. Now it's so reliable I don't even think about it.

I would try powerline adapters if your home isn't using AFCI breakers.

They've become more dependable over the years.

Slightly OT: I can't access my 5GHz option on my cable router/modem on my Dell desktop internal wireless access card. I have to access the 2.4 GHz option, which is slower. Do I have to buy an external card? I'm sorry mods, I just don't know how to fix this.

Edit: addendum to explain things.

Yes.. If your laptop cannot capture the 5GHZ you will need an external (USB) wireless adapter

To clarify... The primary differences between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth. 5GHz provides faster data rates at a shorter distance, whereas 2.4GHz offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds.
