A recap of the year's final day.

    December 31, 2016

    Gulfstream Park (Florida):
    • How often does Todd Pletcher have Maryland-breds? Was this too good to be true? Nope. A first time starter named Woodrow went right to the lead at 3-to-2 odds and wired the field. Pletcher is lights out at this meet and won twice today.
    • In race 5, Vinny Viola's St. Elias Stables won with another Todd Pletcher-trained beauty named Battalion Runner. The second-time starter was sent off at 1-to-5 and looked the part, don't be surprised to see him in some key races involving 3-year-olds later this meet after the 2-year-old becomes three beginning tomorrow. Yes, this baby will be on my DRF Watch List. Another prodigy of the fantastic Unbridled pedigree. Johnny Velazquez rode the winner.
    • It happened. It happened. I REPEAT: IT HAPPENED! Joe Bravo won a race and ended his lengthy and ugly 0-fer at the meet (roughly 0-for-40). After consecutive second place finishes in races 2 and 3 including a $34.20 return in the former, Jersey Joe said enough's enough and won with a 8-to-1 shot that was 15-to-1 morning line and hyped by the impeccable Gabby Gaudet.
    • Christophe Clement finished 1-2 in a $75,000 graded stakes race won by Paco Lopez on a horse that paid $44.80. Clement had three horses in the race and the all-Clement exacta paid $296.
    • Jose Lezcano won two more turf races.
    • Tyler Gaffalione won the rare 2-mile race on a 3-to-1 favorite.
    • Today's crazy finale, a $75.40 winner, $2 exacta for $992, $1 tri paid $4,864, $1 super $71,000+, $1 Pick 3 $2,200+, $.50 Pick 4 paid $8,500 and a $.20 Pick 6 $31,400+. Mandatory payout day, too, with $157,275 in the pool which was hit yesterday.
    • The handle was over $11,000,000.

    Tampa Bay (Florida):

      • A second-time starter named Unkatzable Song, son to Unbridled's Song, was sent off at 19-to-1. Thank you!
    Laurel (Maryland):

      • For those who prefer late bloomers to the Kentucky Derby contenders and more so outsiders, look no further than the New Jersey-bred owned by Isabelle de Tomaso named Irish War Cry. It was the colt's second lifetime race and he passed the test. It may be too premature to peak the Derby hype but needless to say that the focus on this impressive beast was surpassed only by the stretch duel and eventual photo finish after separating themselves from the pack. The race was the $100,000 Marylander. Trained by Graham Motion and ridden by Feargal Lynch, the winner is now 2-for-2 lifetime.
More on Irish War Cry and the potential outsider angle and element:

    http://www.theracingbiz.com/2016/12/31/irish-war-cry-carries-haskell-line-marylander-win/

Parx (Philadelphia) and Aqueduct (New York):

      • Chuckie Lopez went 3-for-3 today. He won the New York opener and traveled to Parx where he won races 7 and 9. Remarkable!
      • Angel Arroyo was the only multiple-winning rider, two wins, to continue his sizzling winter Aqueduct meet.
      • Todd Pletcher won the feature race with Manny Franco riding. Pletcher was a combined 3-for-11 at Aqueduct (NY) and Gulfstream (FL) today.
    Turfway (Kentucky):

      • Race 2 was declared a no-contest after a starting gate issue. Race had concluded and winner's circle ceremonies occurred but all was for naught.
    Santa Anita (California):

      • A wild day of racing highlighted by three graded stakes races.
      • This time the racing gods were aligned with Kent Desormeaux on board Decked Out. In the Grade I American Oaks, my hushed pick earlier this week was Sassy Little Lila until it was touted on Bloodhorse and then the cat was let out of the bag. Luis Saez headed west for this race. And he went to the lead on the 4-to-1 which would have offered nice value. Then, Desormeaux came flying from the rear and got the nod after a lengthy photo finish. Fantastic race despite Saez not getting the bounce. The exacta paid $50 and an agreeable $5.80 for second place wasn't shabby.
There are two horses in this photo:
      • In race 3, a Grade II race, Peter Miller topped the chart with a dead heat. How often does that happen for a trainer especially in a graded stakes race?
      • Both Corey Nakatani, who won a Grade III race after a 7-month layoff until earlier this week, and Alex Solis were victorious today in addition to the dead heat above with Desormeaux and Victor Espinoza riding for Miller. What year is this?!
      • The $.50 Pick 5 paid $13,565.
      • The Pick 6 was hit by a single ticketholder for $313,208. Yesterday, the Gulfstream Rainbow 6 paid over half a million dollars.

Arrogate is out of today's San Pasqual tune up. Bob Baffert has decided to err on the side of caution due to the recent unsettled weather in southern California which played with the racing card Saturday.

    Aqueduct (New York):
    • El Areeb dominated the Grade III Jerome Stakes and earned 10 points towards the Kentucky Derby (list is in post #1 of this thread). Trevor McCarthy/Cathal Lynch did a wonderful job in riding and preparing and perhaps shocked the locals. The 3-year-old colt is now 4-for-5 lifetime and has taken the east coast route with three of those races at Laurel after a start in Philadelphia. Takaful, the overwhelming pick with the New York connections of Jose Ortiz and Kieran McLaughlin, was the even-money morning line favorite but he failed miserably in the wet conditions and was last of seven horses. A Todd Pletcher-trained colt was sent off at 16-1 and finished second.

    Tampa Bay (Florida):
    • Leon McKanas, trainer, was mentioned a few days ago in the prior thread with a longshot winner. He struggled to find the winner's circle in his infrequent entries in 2016 (four wins total) but repeated his recent success with an even longer price. This time the win paid a massive $131.80, the exacta $830, the trifecta $8,841 and the 41 super returned $57,971.
    • Following race 5, the returns were simply spectacular. The double returned $2,582, the $2 Pick 3 7,944.80 and the $2 pick 4 $21,000+.

    Gulfstream (Florida):
    • High prices could be found with relative ease today but nothing more sensational than a $1 Penta (Super Hi 5) which returned $117,000+.
    • Javier Castellano rode for the first time since before Christmas and won the opener.

    Meadows (western Pennsylvania):
    • At the trotters today, a $2 super returned over $50,000. A $2 tri paid a resounding $20,523.60. The exacta was more than a grand.

    Gulfstream Park (Florida):
    • Paco Lopez (3), Luis Saez (2) and Nik Juarez (2) each won multiple times on the 10-race card.
    • This is one for the ages, at least the week. Trying to beat the favorite in the one play of the day, I opted between the 15-to-1 M/L ridden by Luis Saez and the 11-to-1 M/L ridden by Luca Panici in an early jockey change from Jocelyn Gomez. The former was bet down to 3-to-1 from the 15-to-1 spot. The latter was elevated, or lowered if you prefer, to 35-to-1. Nice exacta if it happens. The pair finished second and third and lost to a 21-to-1 shot. The trifecta returned close to $13,000 for a deuce and the exacta over $400.

    Penn National (Pennsylvania):
    • No such things as locks but Trevor McCarthy at Penn National on a 3-to-1 shot is a gimme. He just won and paid $8.40 in race 3. He finished third in race 4 in a rare appearance at the track.
    • In the opener, Jeremy Rose paid $14.80 for a second place finish to a $38.60 winner. The exacta was over $500 for $2.

    Aqueduct (New York):
    • Jose Ortiz won four times. In a stretch of five races, he finished 4-1-0.
    • The winter meet in New York is generally less than an extraordinary but the Ortiz brothers could get on a roll with the area stalwarts elsewhere.
    ==========================

    Oaklawn (Arkansas):
    • The meet begins January 13. One of my favorite meets any year. I look for high returns early and then eventually the meet settles into form. Let's see if that repeats. But Oaklawn can be as tough a track to handicap as almost any in the land.

    Aqueduct (New York):
    • Cornelio Velasquez won three consecutive races today, two for Linda Rice. I don't know Cornelio's age, it may be 50, but he can still ride at this level.
    • Trainer Linda Rice had three wins.
    • Today's edition of Crazy things happen in New York finales: A $686 daily double thanks in part to a $33 winner which followed a $62 winner.

    Gulfstream (Florida):
    • Luis Saez won twice and Kiaran McLaughlin trained two winners, the only multiple victors of the day.
    • Luca Panici rode a 13-1 bomb trained by Kathy Ritvo, who is best known as the trainer of Mucho Macho Man, a rare victory for her. She was 5-for-51 in 2016.
    • Speaking of Mucho Macho Man, a race named in his honor will take place tomorrow (Saturday). The race was formerly known as the Gulfstream Park Derby. I am interested in seeing the outside horse Hemsworth run.
    • There is so much talent at this meet and that will increase the next two-to-three months.

    Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
    • Ugly weather led to abundant scratches. The finale was a 2-horse race. An unofficial match race.

    Turfway (Kentucky):
    • Canceled its race card today due to the elements.

    Penn National (Pennsylvania):
    • Under the lights, Jeremy Rose took the lead in the opener but was caught near the finish. He paid $19 in the middle on a 23-to-1 shot. The winner returned $30.40. The exacta paid $205 for $1.
    • Ty Conner won three times and had a $119.20 winner in race 6. A $1 exacta paid $359. The $.50 tri paid $2,351.

There's some insanity about Ron Ellis not being allowed to run horses in the Breeders' Cup next year. Never heard of this before.

^ The bettors who otherwise would have hit the exotics based on the repositioning are out of luck, too.

What if the horses are just pulled from him permanently?

I don't know the specifics yet as I have been away the past few days. Each state has a different legislative body. I will check to gauge the opinions of some insider friends this weekend. A trainer at Gulfstream recently got an additional suspension for putting horses in the name of an assistant trainer. Marcus Vitali and Allan Hunter were those two individuals. For purposes of confirmation:

    http://www.paulickreport.com/news/ray-s-paddock/ritvo-stronach-tracks-bar-vitali-hunter-entry-box/

In another instance, Kirk Ziadie, who has been suspended multiple times, is currently without any license while his father is an active trainer at Gulfstream. The latter passed the test of whether there was any conflict since this article was released.

Woodbine shippers seem to be doing fairly well in at least the opportunities I have utilized. This is a different situation of course.

    =======================

Bob Baffert is on record as saying he would prefer an inside post for Arrogate due to Gulfstream's reputation as a speed-favoring facility. The position of the starting gate can be a hindrance to those who don't immediately dictate a pace.

    Oaklawn (Arkansas):
    • An Illinois-bred won the feature race and paid $19.80.
    • For those taking the Arkansas route to the Kentucky Derby, the Smarty Jones being the first of four races (also Southwest, Rebel and Arkansas Derby later in the calendar year) will be run Monday afternoon.)

    Gulfstream (Florida):
    • The finale saw a 21-1 and a 108-1 rock the board. The exacta paid over $2,700 for a $2 bet. The $1 trifecta returned more than $10,000.

    Gulfstream (Florida):
    • Joe Bravo, on board Flatlined, won the Grade II Fort Lauderdale with a 15-1 shot trained by veteran trainer Scooter Dickey. Jersey Joe found a lane four wide and motored home with a $32.60 winner. Joe had struggled to find the winner's circle this meet but he succeeded here. Have whip, will travel! There was value in the race especially with Todd Pletcher not having anyone entered. The $2 exacta returned over $400.
    • Todd Pletcher won two of the three stakes races and had three wins total. He is having an astounding meet to date.
    • Someone nailed the Rainbow Six at over $165,000+. There were more horses singled in the finale than any last race of that type of wager in my recent memory and yet the second shortest price on the board prevails.

    Oaklawn (Arkansas):
    • The opening couple of weeks can be tormenting with high prices expected but difficult to catch. The first couple of days of the meet have seen some nice payouts including a Pick 4 for $17,000+ for a $1 bet. Good luck with Oaklawn!
    • Jose Ortiz, a top east coast rider, won his first ever race at this track and then repeated a victory later in the day. He has moved his tack there for a few racing days.

    Gulfstream (Florida):
    • Luis Saez won four times. He is an efficient rider.

    Aqueduct (New York):
    • Sad news today that a veteran trainer passed away to cancer. Glenn DiSanto, rest in peace. Sixty-two is too young.
    • Nine races, nine jockeys and trainers tasted victories. The most impressive may have been whatever inspired Mike Luzzi into riding like days past to a $15 winner. Go Luzzi go. He is still a decent rider when on the lead but generally doesn't come from the back often in his limited opportunities. Luzzi was 1-0-2 in 5 rides.
    • Today's version of New York's finales are unpredictable: A $66 winner which helped a $2 Pick 4 pay $34,000+.

    Oaklawn (Arkansas):
    • Jose Ortiz won the last two races.

    Oaklawn (Arkansas):
    • In one race on a wet surface, the entry mates 1 and 1A dueled. The eventual winner lost an edge and slid towards the rail akin to a car on ice yet was controlled impressively and though nearing the rail, regained composure and passed his mate. A very unique finish.
    • Calvin Borel won with a nice ride.
    • Uncontested was just that. The connections should be happy with the performance. He picks up 10 points for the Kentucky Derby (full list in post #1).

    Gulfstream (Florida):
    • Nick Zito saddled a winner for the 2,000th time. Ironically, while on Smarty Jones Stakes day.
    • The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $37,000.

    Aqueduct (New York):
    • Jacqueline Davis won going away and stylishly in race 8 on a 64-1 bomb. The trainer Marialice Coffey had just one win in 2016 and the horse was 2-for-38 lifetime.
    • Following the ninth and final race of the day, the Pick 4 paid $12,635.
    • Rayan Gazader, a Gulfstream rider, won race 2 at 44-1 and returned $90.
    • Kendrick Carmouche won twice including the Grade III feature race.

    Parx (Philadelphia):
    • The second race saw a trifecta return over $12,000.

    Laurel (Maryland):
    • Sometimes one never knows. A 90-1 named LockUpTheBourbon had the lead, took a step back, fought gamely in the stretch and rallied for third. The 4-year-old filly looked nothing like her odds. She paid an attractive $30 for third.

    Santa Anita (California):
    • Flavien Prat won three races.
    • Mike Smith won the Grade III feature race.
