2003: Patrick Eaves

Played a regular part with the team this year on the fourth line.
Made some progress, hopefully concussion problems will leave.

2004: Andrej Meszaros

Last year had a fantastic rookie year. This year had troubles, but
still showed flashes of brilliance. Potential still for being a #1
defenceman. He is still very young. I was mucho impressed with his poise and play last year. Hopefully he will rebound.

2005: Brian Lee

Still in college, performing well, may be with the team next year.

Leafs:

2003:

Horrible year, I don't even want to talk about it, Jeremy Williams at 220 was a good pick, he has a beauty of a shot, if he can stay healthy I can see him get time on a regular basis in the NHL. Other than that that year was awful. John Mitchell could pan out to something too.

F-

2004:

90 G Justin Pogge

Solid 1st pick in the draft at 90. He looks to be our future in the pipes, hopefully he lives up to it. The guy is lanky.

113 F Roman Kukumberg

Basically a lost overage project I'd say, he was supposed to come in and play from day 1 and he never did anything and stayed in Europe.

157 D Dmitry Vorobiev

Great pickup this late, yet I'm not quite sure if he is going to come over yet.

187 L Robbie Earl

Great college career. This kid has potential, he's a borderline NHLer with some great upside.

220 D Maxim Semenov
252 C Jan Steber
285 R Pierce Norton

No clue about these three guys, they fell off the map I think.

Pretty good draft year seeing as our first pick was in the third round. I'd give it a C+, because the lack of top end picks.

2005:

21 G Tuukka Rask

I think everyone knows that Rask is a killer and has very high potential. Too bad we traded him away, it was a solid draft year.

82 D Phil Oreskovic

Probably going to stay in the AHL, could see him get some time in the 5-6 spot. He's huge and hits like a bull.

153 R Alex Berry

Don't know too much about this guy, still playing at the college level.

173 W Johan Dahlberg

Not much to say about this guy.

216 D Anton Stralman

What could end up being the steal of the draft, Anton has been compared to the likes of Lidstrom. Now I personally think that is a way off comparison, since he's a legend, but you get the magnitude of what this kid could bring.

228 C Chad Rau

I loved this pick on draft day. Late pick and like most college players, he has tons of potential, that we probably won't end up seeing. Hopefully he turns out.

I'd give this draft an A, but we traded away Rask, so it won't have as much effect, since we got rid of our best player.

Eh, I responded about the Rangers but didn't really go into any depth. Doesn't look like anyone else did either, unless I'm blind.

2003

Good god, why? WHY?! This is what every Rangers fan thinks when the 2003 draft is mentioned. Picked perhaps the only real bust in the first round, though there's still some hope Jessiman turns it around. He has been playing better and has been somewhat a victum of numbers in the AHL, but as a first rounder in a deep draft, it's disappointing. At this point, we're all just hoping beyond all hope that something clicks and he finally gets it.

Other than that, I guess it's not too bad.

Baranka - Should be a NHLer, possibly 2nd pairing defenseman who can skate, be physical, make some good outlet passes and has a booming shot (though not much of an offensive guy overall).

Potter - Surprised in how well he did in the AHL last year. Has some promise for sure and I can see him making the NHL. Maybe not with the Rangers though.

Dawes - Highly skilled, just small. Rough time trying to crack the Rangers lineup last year, made worse by the Rangers struggles at the time. Should end up being a solid second line sniper.

2004

Montoya - Top goalie prospect. I think he'll be a #1 in the NHL for sure, but likely not with the Rangers. What they get in return for him is up in the air...

Korpikoski - Solid player. Quite skilled but might not have the little extra to turn into a consistant offensive threat. If so, good second line, two way player who can control play. If not, good third line, two way player who can control play.

Byers - Surprising pick has turned into a surprising player at the AHL level. Still probably won't be more than a bottom 6 player, but is looking like he could make the show.

Dubinsky - I like this guy a lot. Very talented, still developing and reaching for a potential that keeps climbing. He has to grow into his skills some, but I'll be surprised if he doesn't make the NHL as a 2nd line center.

Ryan - Very fast, skilled player who intrigues me. His bust potential is still high, but could be a speedy 2nd line scorer.

Callahan - Great value pick. Tore up the AHL and performed very well in the NHL for a rookie coming in at the end of the year. Isn't a lock for the team next year, but certainly has a foot in the door and with a solid camp, should be on the team. Could be a crash and bang type second liner.

2005

Staal - Kinda speaks for itself, but great pick at this point. Hopefully he gets into the Rangers lineup this year, and we're all looking at him to be the cornerstone of the Rangers future D. Not quite an elite defenseman, but solid #1 who can lead his team.

Sauer - Another nice pick. Kind of a Staal-lite, in my opinion. Has skills but won't put up a ton of points. Good defensively and a leader. Very much a NHL player.

Cliche - Liked the pick, more or less, but like how the trade for Avery worked out even more.

Dupont - Strong, power forward type. Not sure how his game will translate to the NHL, but he made strides each year and gets a crack at the AHL now.

Pyatt - One of the more lauded players from the WJC's, if I remember correctly, and all around good player. A lock to be a great 3rd liner who does the important things, IMO.

Came over for one terrible year with the Marlies, then went back home :teach: ;)

Semenov is like a lesser version of Vorobiev. Could be a bottom pairing or no. 7 defenseman but probably makes more money at home, so he's probably not coming over ever.

Steber went home to Czech Republic after playing in the QMJHL and having a subpar year in the ECHL.

Norton's still plugging away in college. He improved a lot on last year, was even praised for his two way ability. Big kid too, so possibily a Marlie fill in if he's ever signed... 9th round, so you take what you get.

Not much to say about this guy.
Berry's similar to Norton had no impact in 1st year, then was pretty solid in his sophomore year. If we sign him, could be another Marlie fill in since he's big too, either way inconsequential.

Dahlberg wasn't signed before the deadline this year, so we no longer have his rights. Was supposed to be the toughest Swede ever drafted, but never did anything in the Swedish lower leagues.

So there's some absolutely useless information on obscure Leafs prospects. YES!!!

OILERS

2003- #22 MARC-ANTOINE POULIOT
Great player, strong leader, third liner with second line upside, nice fit with the team and is just finding his game.

2004- #14 DEVAN DUBNYK
Large goalie with good skills. Has been the victim of a numbers game in the minors but he should shine this year in the AHL. Did quite well in the ECHL last year. Possibility of a legit NHL starter.

2004- #25 ROBBIE SCHREMP
Powerplay specialist and offensive wizard, Schremp has discarded the 'bad attitude' label that chased him to this position in the 2004 draft. He had less than a point per game in the AHL last year but played well with Robert Nilsson. Should be an NHLer but the jury's still out. Top six or bust.

2005- #25 ANDREW COGLIANO
Speedy forward with a great attitude. Will now play in the AHL after posting great stats in college. I have high hopes for him and I think he'll be a legit top line player in the future.

2005 Also saw the oilers draft Taylor Chorney and Slava Trukhno.

For the Flyers....

2003 - They made out really well
11 C Jeff Carter
24 C Mike Richards
81 R Stefan Ruzicka
85 D Alexandre Picard
87 F Ryan Potulny

2004- not so great, only one player that has played an NHL game and no real solid prospects
286 L Triston Grant

2005- Not to bad, two prospects that could turn into good players in the NHL

29 R Steve Downie
91 D Oskars Bartulis

I would say that the 2003 and 2005 drafts are successful at this point, but the 2004 turned out bad, although we did not have a pick until the third round.

Believe me, Steve Downie will play for the Flyers on the first line one day. He's mean and very good offensively.

Canes:

2003
Eric Staal, #2 overall - Not much needs to be said here.

Dany Richmond, #31 overall - Played ok with the Canes but was eventually sent to Chicago for Babchuk. That was looking great until Anton had his feelings hurt.

Kevin Nastiuk, #126 overall - Still in the system as a goalie, but probably won't amount to much. May have a tiny bit of trade value to another team, but that's it.

First two rounds were good, then the rest sucked.

2004
Andrew Ladd, #4 overall - Traded up to get him by adding a free 2nd acquired from Toronto in the Glen Wesley rental. Wouldn't be surprised to see him have a breakout year this year.

Justin Peters, #38 overall - Yet another goalie. Will likely never be more than a backup with this team but probably holds decent trade value.

Casey Borer, #69 overall - Depending on who you ask, may make the Canes in the next two years.

Brett Carson, #109 overall - Ditto Borer, but he's a step below.

Magnus Akerlund, #137 overall - Another goalie project. Probably not going to amount to much.

Probably one of the better recent drafts by the Canes. Fun to be at, and everyone wanted Ladd when he was called.

2005
Jack Johnson, #3 overall - In terms of choice alone, he was a no brainer at #3. Too bad it didn't work out like it should have.

Nathan Hagemo, #58 overall - Was looking like a pretty good choice until he had to retire due to injury.

Joe Barnes, #64 overall - Regressed a bit this past year if I recall, but still a solid pick.

Jakub Vojta, #94 overall - Was thought to be a steal immediatly after the draft, but also regressed.

A few others in this draft like Risto Korhonen, Kyle Lawson, and Nicholas Blanchard who have an outside chance of doing something...but probably not.

Solid if unspectacular drafts all the way around. With their first round picks, the Canes picked the 3 guys I really wanted (in 2002 also actually, but not this year). They really really need the later round guys to do something.

Going more in depth on my answers:

2003
No 1st because of the Blake trade Kings took Brian Boyle, but no regrets

2/63 D Dave Liffiton: A few games in the NHL looks to be fringe player

4/131 W David Svagrovsky: Unimpressive minor leaguer split time between AHL and CHL/ECHL headed back to Europe

5/146 F Mark McCutcheon: Lackluster career at Cornell blossomed a bit his last two seasons, but unsigned

5/163 C Brad Richardson: Nice late round gem, has top 6 upside and is useful on the bottom 6, already a full time NHLer

7/204 R Linus Videll: big and raw, never performed much until last season, but unsigned and rights are lost

7/225 F Brett Hemingway: spent four years at New Hampshire signed an ATO with Albany, might get an offer to play for the Cleveland Steamers next year.

8/257 L Darryl Yacboski: played 5 years in the WHL and has since fell off the face of the earth

9/288 R David Jones: Pretty good find. Had an ankle injury heading into draft year. Avs took a flyer on him and he turned in 3 good years at Dartmouth, signed this off season, decent shot at the NHL and a favorite on the Avs board

Overall: C+

2004
1/21 L Wojtek Wolski: After his draft year there were periodic lamentations we didn't take Schremf, followed by winning OHL player of the month four strait times and OHL MVP, made a splash in 1st round last year vs Dallas, 4th in rookie scoring this year, still needs some consistency

2/55 R Victor Oreskovich: Lackluster stay at Notre Dame, headed to OHL and performed better albeit suspended for a awhile, didn't get signed and is now an FA

3/72 L Denis Parshin: Wildcard then as now, demonstrates enormous skill but still has same question marks, lack of transfer agreement hanging over our heads

5/154 D Richard Demen-Willaume: played a handful of games in the CHL and went back to Europe
6/184 D Derek Peltier: average college player heading into senior year, probably won't garner a contract

7/215 G Ian Keserich: rode the bench at Ohio State, went back down to the USHL this year is either transferring or heading to Europe

8/239 R Brandon Yip: old sophomore at BU, still has some checking up side

9/249 L J.D. Corbin: Had some bad luck with injuries at Denver, longshot as an energy forward

9/ 281 D Stephen McClellan: Didn't finish freshman year at Northeastern, might be heading to D3

Overall grade: B, could raise or drop depending on Parshin and Yip, Wolski was a good pick

2005

Traded out of first round for #47 and #52 Washington took Joe Finely, no regrets

2/34 C Ryan Stoa: gangly project, headed for junior year at Minnesota, improved this year, should get a contract after next season

2/44 C Paul Stastny: Home run, fan favorite, legacy, surpassed expectations, Calder Runner up

2/47 L Tom Fritsche: looking good, might have been signed this off season if not for set back with stomach ailment, rebounded nicely at Ohio State

2/52 C Chris Durand: Not offered contract, dud in WHL until playoffs which wasn't enough for Avs, at the time hyped as 1st round talent

3/88 C T.J. Hensick: Contended for the Hobey this year, signed by the Avs, could have an NHL future

4/124 D Raymond Macias: Some injury trouble, but signed and has some upside as a PP specialist and can play some wing

6/166 D Jason Lynch: Avs walked away from his rights before the 1st year was out, total miss

6/168 C Justin Mercier: Headed into 2nd year at Miami, nice forward prospect

7/222 D Kyle Cumiskey: spent last year in the AHL, had a cup of coffee with Avs this year and recorded his first goal a stunning success for a 7th rounder

Overall grade: on early returns A- two busts, one fantastic pick, a late round gem and little reason to be discouraged by any of the other five picks.

Panthers' 1st Rounders:

2003:
Horton- Solid Pick Not at his potential yet, but it looks like he's getting there with a solid year last season.
Anthony Stewart-Looking like a bust. This is his make or break year.

2004:
Olesz- Solid, has not had a breakout year yet

2005 (Bad Lottery for us considering we placed bad the prior year):
Mcardle- hasn't played at NHL level yet. He's playing in the AHL level unless he has a really good training camp. He should be callup at some point during the season. The verdict is still out on him

I would say the Panther's were "winners" in 03 and 04 since they went 2/3 in getting top 6 forwards. It's too early for 05.

San Jose:

2003:
1st Round, 9th Overall
LW Milan Michalek

Has turned into a legitimate first line player with game-breaking skills. 66 points at age 22, and only looks to be getting better.

1st Round, 16th Overall
RW Steve Bernier

Dominated in his rookie season playing on a line with Patrick Marleau and Milan Michalek, but broke his foot last season and didn't recover till the playoffs, where he played excellent hockey despite not showing up on the scoreboard often. One of the few truly promising power forward prospects, only 21 years old.

2nd Round, 43rd Overall
C Josh Hennessy

Considered a future #2 center, but had no place in the Sharks organization behind Thornton, Marleau, Goc, and Brown. Traded to Ottawa in an ill-fated deal for Mark Bell.

2nd Round, 47th Overall
D Matt Carle

Compared to Brian Leetch, Carle was an offensive force this season, leading all rookie defensemen in points. Along with Marc-Eduard Vlasic, created a "San Jose" defense pairing on the NHL all-rookie team.

7th Round, 205th Overall
C Joe Pavelski

Won a National Championship with the University of Wisconsin, and took the NHL by storm early in his callup this season, scoring 4 goals in 5 games, but suffered a foot injury that continued to hamper him through the playoffs. Future #2 center.

2004:
Round 3, 94th Overall
G Tomas Greiss

The future of the Sharks goaltending, Greiss was fantastic at the 2006 Olympics for Germany, including one spectacular game against Canada. Still very young, at 21, he had a great first season in North America with the Worcester Sharks.

-Not a good draft for the Sharks, but there are still some unknowns.

2005:
1st Round, 9th Overall
RW Devin Setoguchi

Quite a few outsiders were surprised by this pick, but Setoguchi finally stayed healthy last season, and was fantastic for Prince George of the WHL. Projects to be a top 6 forward, but at worst, he looks like a third liner. Gritty player.

2nd Round, 35th Overall
D Marc-Eduard Vlasic

Vlasic was the player selected with the second round pick that the Sharks received for Miika Kiprusoff. What a selection. At 19, he played top pairing minutes on one of the NHL's best defenses, and displayed maturity unheard of at his age. Future top pairing defenseman, and along with Matt Carle was selected to the NHL's all-rookie team.

thing is the draft is more than one round.

Especially when the topic of the thread is "who won ... draft?". Otherwise might as well go with the teams who picked 1, 2, 3 and one or two late 1st round gem. That would be a rather boring thread.
