Ok so I saw in trade forum that if he doesn't get extended he is up for FA at the end of the upcoming year.

So my question is this worth picking him up for 4-6 years next year if he makes it (preferably in the 5-6 million range)? He is 28 right now and will be 29-30 when he hits FA.

he may hit FA but if he does its 100% for sure he signs for 7 years and at least 5.5 million cap hit

Won't the Wings have all sorts of cap room this time next year? It's possible. Of course, you have to think SJ will trade Pavelski if they can't sign him. That's pretty much how teams operate these days.

Yeah they could trade him but that is not a guarentee he will resign with who they trade him to.

Would you be averse to locking him up to a 7yr 5.5-6.5 range zetterberg4capt? I believe towards the end of a contract the cap will be in the 80-90 million range and at worst he would be a 3rd line center/ 2Line winger?

Let's remember we just signed Weiss for 5 years.

For 5 years? I think so. For 7 years? I'm not sure. For any more than 7 years? Probably not.

Next year, if Pavelski becomes a UFA, he'll be 3 years younger than Lecavalier was this year when the Flyers signed him to a 5 year deal.

I just figure with him he would be killer on a z+d line. Could swap out for center on a 2nd line or play a top 6 wing as needed. Would guarentee that we have a top 6 rh center in the near future without needing to rush ironhook to the position.

Also he wouldn't hurt us cap wise at his contracts end cause the cap will be around 80-90 million so that would be like us signing him now for like 3.5-4.5 million cap wise. He could be inked for like 5 years at basically alfie's level (5.5m). He is responsible as 2 way, great at faceoffs and like datsyuk and z can play both center or wing depending on his lines needs.

We'll see where we are next year, should Pavelski be the best option in the market and we have the need and the cap space, it'd be worth considering, but other options could present themselves such as Vanek. We'll see, it's all relative.

I'd much rather have pavelski over vanek but that's just me. Vanek is gonna be the top overated winger fa contract that just makes you shake your head when you see what he signs for (7.5+ million calling it now).

Vanek might be the best PP specialist in the league, he is going to age well. Huge fan of signing him and to big money.

Reminds me of an aging Dale Andreychuk in terms of what I think he will still bring at the end of his next contract in terms of this.

I think Gaborik is going to be out there this year as well in less I am mistaken right now.

A team can't sign a UFA for more than 7 years. The team that owns his rights can go 8.

So, more than 7 years is not an option for Detroit anyway.

And he should be traded in the team at the trade deadline. Just trading those rights at summer does not open the 8-year option.

Lets also remember the reason we will have the cap space. We will only have 4 Dmen under contract: Kronwall, Smith, Lashoff, and Kindl. DeKeyser will be RFA. Then whats in GR.

Something tells me they would rather spend that space on Dmen. Maybe a big guys like J-Bo or Phaneif and the someone like Girardi or Orpick or extend Ericsson.

yeah Alfie, Bert, and Sammie will be off the books but I think we have more forward depth than defense depth. At least that defensive depth is further away from NHL ready.

Yea, I think we promote forwards from within. Dont need to sign any FA forwards really. Use that money to upgrade Quincey and make a decision on Ericsson based on what he is asking. Really depends on the development of Dekeyser, Smith and Kindl as well.

Pavelski would be nice but we need to see what Tatar, Nyquist and Weiss give us first.

Vanek is a slightly more skilled, less physical Franzen. The main reasons he usually scores a little more than Franzen is because he gets more ice-time, more ice-time in scoring situations, more PP time and is less responsible defensively.

The Wings have a lot of smaller skilled finesse forwards on the team and in the system.
They need a power forward.

Pavelski is going ot be 30 next year. I think he is about 10 years too young for Holland and Babcock. :sarcasm:

Assuming Alfredsson retires at the end of the year, he could just take his cap hit. I'd like to see Pavelski in Detroit but with Weiss signed for 5 years and young guys like Tatar, Nyquist, Andersson etc. almost certainly on the roster or a year away, where would he fit in you think? Who'd be odd man out?

If Nyquist or Tatar are moved, it's for a legitimate top 3 player or a top pairing defenseman. If it's for a top 3 player then forget about getting Pavelski because Weiss is playing his spot. I would argue that their games are eerily similar with Weiss getting the short end of the stick on teammates.

If that trade is for a defenseman then it's possible Pavelski would be signed but I'd rather have a bigger guy who is a legitimate top 6 forward or another sniper.
