Speculation: Hurricanes wanting to get "tough" this offseason?

yep, need to go in the opposite direction of every other successful team - makes sense!!!

toughness and truculence was 4-5 years ago - skill and speed wins now - stick with your youthful core, get better goaltending and watch your team back in the playoffs - is someone just making **** up here????
:laugh::laugh::laugh: not everyone has Malkin,Crosby and Kessel Pittsburgh would have won the cups with a all goon 4th line
Typical hfboards modern young fan
As soon as a tough team wins it next the pattern will change

ILucic has a NMC, Lucic has a $6M Cap hit until he's 35 (5 more seasons), Lucic is owed $26M in real dollars over the remainder of his contract
vs.
Darling does not have a NMC, Darling has a cap of $4.1M until he's 32/33 (3 more seasons), Darling is owed $11.8M over the remainder of his contract.

I do agree that Lucic is more likely to be a useful player than Darling, but not sure I'd say he's more tradeable at this point.
I would, simply because teams are more likely to give a chance at redemption to a guy like Lucic, who up until this year was worth every dime of that contract, and has a good chance of rebounding, versus a career backup who was a tire fire in his only season as a starter.

It’s not a Moneyball thing, it’s a matter of the Hurricanes being a team that SUPER obviously plays a perimeter game and is SUPER soft as a group. If you’re looking at those charts and deciding the Canes get a lot of chances from the dirty areas, then you’re just using the charts wrong.

How so? The charts do indicate Carolina gets between +.2 and +.5 per game more shots in close.

Again, one breakaway every 2-5 games and there you have it. One Jeff Skinner move to the net and there you have it.

Those shots are not “dirty” scoring opportunities. Put the laptop away and watch an actual Hurricanes game, they don’t play that kind of game in any way whatsoever.

I watched every Canes game this year. I didn't see more breakaways than a team like Philadelphia had.

I will readily admit that what drove the Canes to being the "best" Corsi team in the league was shots from the perimeter. It is right there in the graph. The areas along both walls--especially to the right of the goalie--are pink or red. I am not saying that was one Nordstrom shot every game. I can accept the data.

And the data are telling all of us the issue is shots in the middle of the ice (this is where teams like Tampa and Winnipeg dominate) or from just inside the blueline. The team needs to improve getting these shots to become better--but just repeating that what was obvious when, in fact, it isn't supported will only lead to the same outcomes.

Leo Komarov brings some kind of toughness. He will be UFA this summer. Maybe they should sign him. 1,2 M/y or something.

They could always hit the batting cages and let the balls hit them, to toughen up for hockey season.

Mental, physical, meta-physical toughness... it doesn't matter if they don't have a goalie who can be tough on pucks.

I'm late to this party but does that chart differentiate shots on goal from "scoring chances"? Because I would believe that the canes are average to above average at generating weak shots along the ice as they are getting knocked over by a defenseman right in front of the crease.

Hire AV as your coach. He is guaranteed to dress a goon every game. Sometimes he will even play the goon on the third line and completely reduce the effectiveness of your third line.

He also enjoys playing goons against other teams top lines.

And, no I am not just talking about Tanner Glass. Glass was a good guy who gave his all every game. I am talking about goons like McLeod.

I will cancel my tickets if they hire AV. Who wants to watch that garbage? He should be banished to Siberia for how badly he mismanaged Buchnevich.

Hopefully for Edmonton that Lucic is traded for Jeff Skinner. But I doubt it.

I think Carolina might be interested in Joel Armia.

Matt Martin is available for free.

Komarov is a serviceable bottom 6 guy who brings a lot of grit and leadership. Great on the PK. Can't imagine he re-signs with the Leafs.
