What of potential does Bean really have at this point in the NHL? How many years out do you think he will be till he's playing full time? 2 or 3 years?

Personally I’d look for him to really hit the NHL in 3 years. This year being a pure development season, next year being his first crack at making the jump, and then the following year having real expectations attached.

soooo many variables here. he has the makings of a top 4 D who excels on the PP. many young defenders blocking his path to the NHL right now, and the Canes have not hidden their willingness to make a trade to improve the NHL forwards. so he could get traded, or a defender ahead of him could get traded, and so on.

this is his last year of juniors, and i’m not getting the vibe that he will require a ton of AHL games to be ready. so his situation is very much in flux until trade deadline, or draft day. something like that.

One issue is that the Canes have Slavin, Hanifin, Fleury and even Carrick as LHD so there is no pressing need to get Bean into the line-up. I think it's a case where he is in Junior this year and AHL next year. After that, it will depend a lot on what happens with the others. Is there another expansion draft where the Canes lose a defenseman? Do they trade one of Hanifin, Slavin or Fleury for offense? etc...

Of course, if Bean comes in and blows the doors off next camp, that could change, but I expect at least 2 more years at least before being in the NHL.

So does Bean have higher PP upside than even Hanifin? That's been the main disappointment of mine with Hanifin, though I know he's young.

Thought on Necas: Are the Canes essentially using NHL resources to put him on an NCAA schedule for a while? The NCAA plays a lot less games than most leagues, with much more time in practice and in the gym. It's a really good system for preparing players physically. Game time is critical when you're trying to get players adjusted to making good decisions at speed ('hockey sense'), but Necas does that extremely well already, his issue is just sheer strength, which becomes apparent when you watch him try to work the puck along the boards. At least in preseason, the NHL guys or even the guys a few years ahead were able to muscle him off consistently. That strength is a function of age and when guys hit their peak testosterone levels, but spending a lot of time in the gym can help. If the Canes are willing to use a roster spot to keep him practicing with the NHLers and working out with Brindy, with one game a week or so, that strikes me as something that could be a very effective development tool, and you can make 9 games last quite a while that way.

You have more faith in a plan than I do. My feeling is it went something like this:

Ron: Hey, Bill. I want to give Janne and Martin a couple of games with the big club while Stemp is out as a reward/motivation for a good camp. Once we've gotten them a couple of games, we'll send them back and call up one of the guys from Charlotte.

Bill: Ok, I'll see what I can do. But if we are winning, I'm not going to change much so he may sit in the press box a while.

Ron: Fine.

While I would have hoped the Kuokkanen would have scored by now given his overall play, it's that overall play that is likely blocking games from Necas right now. No matter how good he is, Kuokkanen had been the better player in my eyes.

Given how Lucas Wallmark has started the season, I'm not particularly excited to see "gritty veteran" Lee Stempniak back in the line up any time soon.

Bean is a full OFD Hanifin is more of a TWD. more of a Doughty type player. Hanifin has the higher upside defensivly and Bean offensivly. i see bean becoming a current werenski (70 P PP QB)

70? Pump the breaks a bit there. Bean absolutely has top 4 OFD potential but 70 points is on par with guys like Burns, Hedman, and Karlsson, hell even 60 is still that territory.

Umm... we are talking about a future HoFer in Bean , 70 might be his floor.

How about a smaller goal 5 feet above the regular one that's worth 2x? Rock N Jock style.

If Bean grows like he did in the book Jack In The Beanstock, we've got something potentially dangerous for other teams in him.
