Austria is big, Poland has been in top tier for years, Norway... I haven't really followed myself really. I think it's still more on the individual guy than country terms, who's the king of the hill for an era kind of rotates from country to another.

Well I've heard that Polish Vodka is the best vodka...that would explain a lot...

So much potential.

Bad news everyone. The IRS contacted me by phone 3 times from 3 different area codes today. All 3 times I was told that all my properties and myself will be seized in the jailhouse. I called them back to let them know I wasn't going to be paying my taxes this year and they told me the police would come and get me. I'm sitting here waiting for them now.

I guess this means I won't be posting here for awhile. You've been such wonderful people I will miss you all

Don’t worry, I got you.

I know a Nigerian prince who owes me a favour. I’m sure he can get in touch with someone and get you off.

How’d you know?!
Elementary, my dear Watson. The prince obviously has to have some tax collector expertise to be of any help in this case, and, as he hardly has needed to go to tax law school being a member of royalty, the expertise has needed to come from moving his funds outside of the authority of the local IRS, and if you are in the know of these dealing you surely must have had a part in organizing them, in all likeliness in the role of a foreign partner.

Between the IRS calling me, an apparent warrant for my arrest in New York, Montana, and Texas (none of which I've visited), and how there's "not currently a problem with my credit card", my phone has been blowing up for the past few months.

And those are just the robots that leave voicemail.

Somewhere there is a huge call center full of polite robots who are unfairly abused just for doing their job.

I got something from one of these IRS scammers sent to my email recently. The Nigerian ones I've seen before but this is a new one to me. Normally they just call and leave vague threats that are just completely laughable.

Common ones we get:

IRS (usually recorded message telling me to call a number)
Microsoft Support (usually a guy with an Indian accent) telling me that my computer will be disconnected from the "mother server"
Not currently a problem with my credit card, but it's the LAST chance to lower my interest rate.
And recently, "We are in your area and will give you a quote for home improvement. Interestingly enough, the last time it was a guy with an Indian accent again."

I'm convinced some of these only want to speak to a woman though, as my wife tends to get them more than I do where-as I was getting a lot of hang ups.

I had no idea what HisIceness was talking about, so I had one of those "not sure if this is serious" reactions. Good to hear more explanation from the rest of you...

I get a fair number of calls from NC area codes that are junk, but I've learned to stop answering them, and they don't leave voicemail. You guys are getting voicemail on your mobile from these f***ers...?

Nope they never leave a message with me, and if it's a number I don't recognize I don't answer unless they contact me another way first.

Anybody that's worth talking to is already saved on my phone with their name, so any call that pops up without a name, I hang up on immediately. Might be why I'm getting the voicemails. Robots expect some delay.

I wish I had that flexibility. I work with a bunch of graduate students from all over the country, so I never can tell if the call is just spam or someone that legitimately is looking to talk to me based upon the number.

One thing I have noticed, though, is the frequency of BS calls that try to mimic my own number. My 3-digit prefix is 543 and I get a bunch of spam calls that are 919-543-XXXX. It is so bad, that I use that as a screen; I won't answer any calls that look close to my number.

I've also learned that after saying "Hello?" or whatever when answering the phone, if there's a delay from the other end, just go ahead and hang up.

I used to do that and almost got bit by it once. A guy called, and hesitated and I almost hung up. He started telling me he was from a firm that sounded like a law firm, but it was really a collection agency, and was telling me I owed money on a past due bill to the tune of about $90 ($45 for the bill, $15 for the late fee, $30 for the collection fee). I asked him for details and he just kept saying "better pay now or it will go on your credit report" and was pretty aggressive and belligerent about it. I told him to email me the information about the bill in question, as I was sure I didn't have any delinquent bills and he told me it was an Urgent Care place and he'd send me the bill. He never sent the bill, but I called the urgent care place and sure enough, I had an outstanding bill with them. It was their mistake though as they screwed up my mailing address on their end so I never got the bill and subsequent notices. They said they'd fix it, send me a new bill for $45 and to ignore any late fees and they'd handle the collection agency. I paid the $45 while on the phone (as it was a legit bill) and hung up.

Two days later, the collection agency guy calls and says I owe him $75 ($45 for the bill and $30 for the collection). I told him I talked to the urgent care and already settled it. He said it doesn't work that way, they can waive the late fee, but that's it. He got very belligerent with me, screaming at me on the phone, threatening to ruin my credit, etc. if I didn't pay up, and was being a total ass about it so I hung up. Never heard from him again, nor did anything show up on my credit.

I get it, those collection agencies must hear "I never got the bill" or "I already paid it" 90% of the time, but man was he over the top. Now, I at least give them a second longer after the initial delay before hanging up just to make sure.
