Janos Vas (Tingsryds)
Marton Vas (Fehervar)

Results:
HUN – NED: 7-3
HUN – KOR: 6-3
HUN – ESP: 13-1
HUN – ITA: 3-4 (OT)

The top four point leaders of the tournament were from Hungary. Balazs Ladanyi led all players with 10 assists and 12 points and his +7 was also better than any other player. 23 year old Istvan Sofron led all goal scorers with 6 and was second to Ladanyi in points with 10. Sofron was named the tournament’s top forward. Andras Horvath led all defensemen in points with 9 and was third in overall scoring. Marton Vas finished fourth overall in points with 3 goals and 5 assists.

Better performance against Italy by the Hungarians compared to last year against Slovenia. Hungary played a pretty strong game. A couple of soft goals early on and some bad penalties cost Hungary promotion to the elite division. On the bright side, the team iced by Hungary was younger than the 2010 version, so the immediate future may not be as a bleak as some have suggested not so long ago.

With the realignment of the W.C. format, promotion to the elite will be more difficult. Hungary will join Austria, Slovenia, Ukraine, Great Britain and Japan in Division 1A which will be played in Slovenia. With some luck (bad luck) relegation to Division 1B is a possibility in this competitive group. Considering the proximity of the three EBEL countries to each other, it should be a great tournament and a profitable one for the Slovenians.

After beating Lithuania in a shootout, Hungary's U20 team lost to Ukraine 7-6. This loss pretty much assures that Hungary will remain in Division II for another year.

Next year a strong Romanian team, led by Roberto Gliga and the Biro twins, will be challenging for promotion. Croatia, the likely candidate for relegation from Division I, will be hoping that their return to Division II will be brief.

After giving up 9 goals to the Poles last year and now 7 to the Ukrainians this year, some serious attention needs to be directed towards defense if Hungary has any hope of escaping this division. The team will also need a healthy Benjamin Nemes and Kristof Hentes on the roster in order to win the group.
