Playing big minutes for the Czech team. No reason he shouldn't be in Detroit to begin the season unless he tanks hard this off-season.

Need to give these young defenseman opportunity to develop in the NHL. Every single one of our defenseman is replaceable.

Shouldn't be hard to get rid of at least one to make room.

Could not agree more. This is the guy who needs to be on the Red Wings next year more so than anyone else.

Everything I've read has stated his defensive game has improved in noticeable way. It still might not be 'great' by any means but he is aware and working on it.

Think at this point it would be best to have him with the Wings next year. Play him sheltered a bit, let him make mistakes and learn from them. Seems like the trend of letting Dmen develop in the NHL has worked out better than keeping them down in the AHL for extended time frames.

Unless we don't sign a UFA this summer to take Green's spot, I have a really hard time seeing Hronek making the team this fall. I'm expecting us to fill Green's spot with someone, either a UFA or Green, and Hicketts to push for a spot.

My bets are on Hicketts. I think they want an extended look at him running a power play unit and he has the work ethic to make massive strides this offseason. I think next year we see a new Hicketts.

I believe Hronek has passed Hicketts on the prospect list. He has played well enough at the Worlds to set himself up for a roster position this fall. Good chance he will run the second power play unit.

Might also depend on what happens with XO. After Green went down, Witkowski or Hicketts were dressed more as the #6D, so I doubt the team has any reservations about waiving and burying XO if they need to make room on the team. The question then becomes who drops down to #7 if Hronek or Hicketts make the team, since I doubt they'd want either seeing press box time if they make the big club.

despite blowing tires on gwg , solid game from Hronek , looked much better than beginning of the tournament . Should be with Wings at end of the season and for many years to come

Obviously training camp might change things but I’d expect Hicketts to start the year as a 3rd pairing pp specialist with Hronek playing 22+ minutes in the AHL in all situations.

We’ll then see the Ken Holland special where Hronek joins the big club around the 25 game mark with a ton of confidence and never looks back.

We have seen this script before.

I think Hronek will progress even faster than most people think. When he does crack the roster I think he'll be a 20 point defenseman if given adequate power-play time. Also I don't think it will be Hicketts who he bumps.

Yea I agree. I’d suspect XO and Jensen would be the most likely casualties baring Holland finding a way out of one of those larger contracts.

Didn't know this but Jiri Fischer is the GM of the Czech team at the Worlds. Some excerpts from a recent Athletic article:

Defenseman Filip Hronek, one of the Red Wings’ three top prospects, has emerged as an important player for the Czechs.

He was added with modest expectations. Hronek joined the Czech Republic as a No. 7 defenseman but has quickly moved up the depth chart.

“The coaches are really getting to know him as a player and as the games went on, he performed and gained more ice time,” Fischer said. “Now, he’s running one of the power plays."

He’s averaging over 15 minutes per game in his first experience with the men’s national team and has impressed Fischer with his willingness to try and make plays as a young defenseman.

He'll learn from that, got way too close to a player of Kane's calibre. Can get away with that against AHL scrubs.

Which is why he needs to play NHL next year in a rebuilding team. Spend too long in the minors and they learn to become AHL players, expedite the development process in the big league.

What does everyone think so far? I saw much of the Leafs game and thought it was his best showing in the NHL this year.

His last couple games have been his best for sure, he played almost 20 mins against Toronto and 23 against Florida. Skating well, making good passes ad scored a goal yesterday. I think theres top pair potential with both him and Cholowski

Best case, both are #1's (not realisitic)
Worst case, both are #4's

Probably both end up high end #3's, that can play top pair in a pinch...2-3+ yrs from now maybe both are #2's. Not too shabby, thanks Chyka.

He needs at least 200 games in the NHL before he becomes what he becomes. So far he's played 12 games.

UPDATE:

Red Wings' top prospects: Some flourishing, some struggling mid-season

Filip Hronek, RhD, Grand Rapids (AHL)
GP:
20, G: 5, A: 13, PT: 18
Drafted: 53rd in 2016

Recalled from the Griffins due to Mike Green's injury, Hronek likely will spend a few more weeks in Detroit, where he has two goals and two assists in 12 games, including a stint at the start of the season.
"He got an opportunity to play more important defensive minutes (in Grand Rapids) that he wouldn't have gotten in Detroit," Horcoff said. "He got a good opportunity on the PK. The message was clear when he left, to be better defensively. He's got to gain the trust of the coaches to be on the ice and defend and play against the other team's best players. He went down with good focus, good work ethic, good attitude and worked on all those things. He's definitely made improvements."
