Mike Smith will be suspended four riding days: May 17, 18, 19, and 20 for a riding infraction Sunday at Santa Anita in race 8. However, he can postpone one day of that suspension which includes the May 19 Preakness and he will ride Justify barring any unforeseen circumstances. The official statement by the stewards was "for failure to maintain a straight course and causing interference in the stretch"

He was also suspended in March for his ride on McKinzie.

Belmont (New York):
  • Javier Castellano has failed to find the winner's circle in his last 27 mounts after not winning with five starts today.
  • Close but no cigar. My theory about Joel Rosario -- if he wins early, he will win again -- failed today. He won the opener but came in second his other two starts. Still, a 3 1-2-0 day isn't bad when the 11-to-1 finishes second in a dead heat.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Opened its brief meet today.
  • Race 3: Top three finishers each separated by a neck.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Brian Hernandez, Jr., mentioned a few times as not only capable and underappreciated at times but an intuitive jockey, won four times including the natural hat trick to conclude the card. He won for four trainers. Among the wins, one paid $69.00.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won three times. He was 8 3-1-3 today. He has been in the money in 13 of his most recent 17 starts.
  • What a wild today for payouts.
  • Race 2: A 34-1 shot won and paid $70.40 ridden by 18-year-old bug Romero Ramsay who won for the first time.
  • Race 7: A 74-to-1 shot won and paid $151.40. The $2 exacta paid in excess of $1,600. The $.50 tri was over $5,500. The $.10 super was an impressive $4,600.
  • Carlo Vaccarezza! The winning trainer and restauranteur. Paid an even $25.00. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $1,700. Buy that rider a beverage tonight and get that horse his favorite snack. Rail rider for sure.

  • Race 10: The finale! Someone busted the vault. The $.20 Pick 6 paid $1,214,280.62. The $.50 Pick 5 was over $25,000. The $.50 Pick 4 over $13,000. The winning ticket was played in the state of Maine, the second time this year a large winning ticket was nailed in the state. The 2, 5, 10, 11 and 12 were all singled by bettors and any of those horses winning the finale would have guaranteed a colossal jackpot for that person. Alas, #12 was the lucky number for that Maine handicapper.

Belmont (New York):
  • About that 27-race skid and Javier Castellano. He was 5 3-2-0 today. He ended the skid with authority.
  • The $2 Pick 6 paid out over $17,000.
  • John Velazquez had one mount and won in the finale. That is not a bad angle in which to wager.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • The $.50 Pick 5 to end the day paid over $10,000.
  • Race 3: A 69-to-1 paid $66.20 for second place.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $58,000. The $2 Pick 4 paid $20,000+. The $2 Pick 3 paid $7,300+.
  • Kevin Gomez won with 11-to-1 and 12-to-1 shots.
  • Edgar Prado won for the 6,998th time. Only seven riders have won 7.000+ races in North American racing history.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • A mostly chalky day with the exception being a 27-to-1 bomb in race 7, the second highest price in a field of 10.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Jockeys Mitchell Murrill and Sophie Doyle each won three times. Doyle did it in four rides.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Reylu Gutierrez, a bug, and Miguel Vasquez both won three times.
Santa Anita (California):
  • The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $12,000 to end the day.

Perhaps preliminary as part of negotiations but some chatter from track operators of Laurel (Md.) hosting the Preakness in the future . The Stronach Group also desires an East coast Breeders' Cup alternative to their Santa Anita (Cal.) property and that could be Laurel; it doesn't appear to be Gulfstream (Fl.) since that track has the Pegasus Stakes and a bustling casino/entertainment complex. A host facility for 2019 has yet to be named.

The party atmosphere at the Preakness is representative of something unique and may not be as easily duplicated at a facility like Laurel. That is one issue.

Pimlico is down to approximately 12 racing days while Laurel hosts about 160. Getting the Breeders Cup could be a strong boost for Laurel; however, at that time of year weather can be troublesome as both New York and New Jersey experienced as host tracks.

From the Baltimore Sun (bullet points), an article discusses the future of the Preakness and whether it will remain in Baltimore or be transferred to Laurel.

Preakness will return to Baltimore's Pimlico in 2019. After that, the race's home is uncertain
  • “The Preakness is not leaving the state of Maryland ever,” Ritvo said.
  • Stronach’s holdings include Laurel Park, a track between Baltimore and Washington that hosts more races annually than Pimlico, and which the company says would be a candidate to stage the Preakness. The Preakness attracted a record 140,327 fans to Pimlico last year.
  • The Stronach Group would need legislative support to move the Preakness to Laurel. Under state law, the race can be moved to another track in Maryland "only as a result of a disaster or emergency."
  • But vast sections of Pimlico have a patched-together, industrial look. Ritvo has said the structure would need to be completely rebuilt — which would cost more than renovating it — and that Stronach has no plans to foot the bill.
  • In a race with Pimlico, Laurel has statistics on its side. The track, in which Stronach has invested $30 million in upgrades the past few years, hosts 159 racing days to Pimlico’s 12. The company said it has invested $20 million in Pimlico during the same period.
  • Stronach wants to host a future Breeders’ Cup at Laurel, an event industry leaders say could cement Maryland’s resurgence on the national racing scene.
  • The Breeders’ Cup could draw 60,000 to 70,000, which means it could also serve as a test run for a possible Preakness at Laurel.
  • Because the infield at Laurel is part of a stormwater management system, the track could not host Pimlico-style concerts. At Laurel, a concert and picnic area would likely be to the side rather than the center of the track.

Belmont (New York):
  • The track handled over $15,000,000 from all sources, almost $600,000 more than last year's card highlighted by the Man o' War Stakes.
  • The race day began with over a half hour delay due to an impromptu meeting between riders and staff. The jockeys were concerned with general safety issues and also a desire to raise rider weights. Bettors were caught unaware for the most part.
  • Jose Lezcano was injured pre-race and eventually released from a hospital. Consecutive replacement riders won races.
  • John Velazquez won four times. Velazquez (4) and Manny Franco (2) combined to win six straight races.
  • Race 1: Junior Alvarado went gate to wire on a 12-to-1 ML bet down to 3-to-1. The horse had run only on wet tracks and in Panama in 12 races.
  • Race 3: $200,000 Grade 3 was won by Kirby's Penny (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward).
  • Race 4: Chris DeCarlo almost stole the show when his 100-to-1 was caught in the stretch. He paid $75.00 and $36.70 for second place.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $29,000. A terrific finish with three across-the-wire.

  • Race 6: Patch, who ran in last year's Kentucky Derby, won for the second time in his career in seven starts:

  • Race 8: $150,000 stakes race won by Westwood (John Velazquez/Kiaran McLaughlin).
  • Race 9: $200,000 Grade 3 was won by A Raving Beauty (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown).
  • Race 10: $300,000 Grade III Peter Pan Stakes, Blended Citizen (Kyle Frey/Doug O'Neill). California shippers, for the most part, finished 1st and 2nd.
  • Race 11: 60th running of the $700,000 Grade 1 Man o' War Stakes was won by Hi Happy (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher). Due to the delay to start the day, this race didn't go off until 7:22 p.m.
  • The $2 Pick 6 paid over $35,000.
  • Luis Saez is having a subpar meet. He is 30 3-3-7 to date.
  • Trevor McCarthy is having an awful time. He is 48 1-7-1.
  • John Velazquez is having a wonderful meet. He is 29 10-1-5 (34% winning).
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Jersey Joe Bravo won the opener, closer and one in between for a 3-win day. Joe Bravo: Have Whip, Will Travel.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $7,800. The $2 Pick 5 paid over $58,000.
  • Race 6: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $2,800.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Corey Lanerie was an impressive 10 5-2-0 today. Three of his five wins came for Michael Maker. The duo was a perfect 3-for-3, the only three starters for the trainer.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • In the $100,000 Grade 3 feature, Matrooh was the victor at 8-to-1. The favorite, Master Merion, stumbled out of the gate and never recovered. Also failed to hit the board for the first time in 11 starts: 11 4-5-1. First time for both on the all-weather track.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 6: Tyler Gaffalione's mount flew with a furious rally to win in the stretch. It was one of three wins for the rider.
  • Trainer Marcus Vitali was 2-for-2.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Kanthaka (Flavien Prat/Jerry Hollendorfer) won the $100,000 Grade 3 feature. Prat is the leafing rider at the meet with 18 victories.
  • After the finale, the $.50 Pick 5 paid over $21,000. The $,50 Pick 4 close to $8,000.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Norman McKnight, who led the most recent meet last year, is an incredible 25 15-4-6 this time. He is winning at 60% and in the money 100%. He won with his lone starter today.

Belmont (New York):
  • Rajiv Maragh won with his first three mounts including a 26-to-1 bomber. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $1,300. The $.50 Pick 5, with three Maragh winners, paid over $6,700.
  • The $.50 Pick 5 to end the day paid over $29,000.
  • Edgar Prado visited and nearly came close to his 6,999th win in his only mount. Entertaining stretch in which he and Jose Ortiz battled and came close to banging in what was a good race by both riders.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Jorge Navarro, trainer, tied a track record with five wins.
  • Na Somsanith, a jockey mostly in retirement, won for the first time since 2014.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Brian Hernandez, Jr. (3), Julien Leparoux (3) and Florent Geroux (2) combined to win 8 of the 10 races. Hernandez was named North American Jockey of the Week on Monday.
  • Adam Beschizza hasn't transferred his recent success to the new meet. He is just 40 3-2-7.
  • Gabriel Saez has not won in 27 starts. Then again, Javier Castellano is 17 0-4-3 when he rides there.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Feargal Lynch was 4 3-1-0. He has won four of his last five starts.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Lilli Kurtinecz, one of my go-to trainers for prices, won the finale and help make one handicapper extraordinarily happy. The $.20 Pick 6 was hit for $101,835.40. The New York-bred was 6-to-1.
  • I am going to follow Uncaptured horses. He was my KY Derby wise guy pick back in 2012 as a 2-year-old, but faltered in the Blue Grass and barely recovered. However, his first crop as a sire is racing this year. The results are too few but today Capture Your Dream (Luca Panici/Anna Varsi) won a 4 1/2 furlongs race by 10 1/2 lengths in an amazing performance. It was her maiden race, keep an eye on her. Also on Uncaptured offspring.

Santa Anita (California):
  • $2 Pick 6 was nailed for $212,935.30 by four handicappers.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Norman McKnight's streak being in the money with every starter ended. He is 29 16-4-7 at the meet after missing the board twice with four starters.
  • Patrick Husbands has been in the money 72% of the time in 50 rides.
  • Eurico Da Silva won three times including the Grade III feature. He is 29 11-5-3 at the meet.
  • Pink Lloyd, a 1-to-9 morning line in a short field of four and who was sent off at that price, improved to a sparkling 15 13-1-0 with his 10th straight win each of which were in stakes, an unprecedented feat in Canada. The Ontario-bred gelding in 6-years-old. Video at link: Pink Lloyd Gets 10th Straight Victory in New Providence - BloodHorse

Monmouth is supposedly ready...

Supreme Court Opens Door for Added Sports Gambling - BloodHorse

The horse racing industry was largely expecting Monday's decision and the impact of expanded legal sports gambling has been a topic at industry meetings this year, like the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association convention and the Association of Racing Commissioners International convention.

Experts believe sports wagering could be a good fit for tracks and online advance-deposit wagering outlets, as it's more complementary to pari-mutuel wagering than slot machines. On the other hand, it's a similar game to betting horses and typically features a lower takeout than pari-mutuel wagering.

At the National HBPA meeting, tote company executive Michele Fischer said horse racing needs to make sure sports bettors place their wagers on site at tracks or through ADW outlets.

"Having sports wagering at our tracks and on our ADWs is very important," said Fischer, the vice president of sales and business development at Sportech Racing and Digital. "If they're not in your building, they're somewhere else."

They are more than ready, back in March they had installed TONS of new flat screens edge to edge in the grandstand, basically expanding capacity of the "new" William Hill SportsBook and Bar, Drazin said today they expect to be taking bets in 2 weeks, Memorial Day weekend!

This is life saving for Monmouth Park, very glad this went our way.

^ You're back!

===================================================

So many interesting angles regarding the sports wagering. If Illinois adopts, it could rescue racing in the state. Arlington is such a historic facility, at least from an outsider's perspective it should get a boost.

Kansas is intriguing. A Las Vegas billionaire bought the shuttered Woodlands race track with hopes of reviving the sport in the state. I believe it was shot down by the state senate in a recent vote but the person maintains ownership. However, another bill said that if sports gambling is passed in the state, a parlor would have to be at an existing race track with live racing accompanying.

New York is a key player. This could affect the future of Aqueduct. It seems the state has a plan in place earlier than most states but to keep in competition with local big players such as Penn., Delaware and New Jersey.

Pennsylvania thrives and is adding casinos. Parx generates much revenue from that aspect of its gaming facility. Pennsylvania will be a huge player in this matter.

Delaware already had a limited form of sports betting, grandfathered. Another state that could receive a huge thrust with the addition of full sports betting.

West Virginia almost certainly will get a jolt. Supposedly many residents go into Ohio to gamble. Racing in WVA is oftentimes at night, and sometimes early in the week.

Massachusetts is perilous but indications lean toward favoring additional betting. That could certainly help the industry in state. While the main race track appears shuttered possibly after this year, other facilities could benefit and it wasn't too long ago that the Stronach Group (Gulfstream, Laurel, Santa Anita, more) wanted to increase its presence by pursuing a former greyhound track still in operation as a simulcast facility.

Florida is Florida. Casinos abound. There will be much discussion within the state based on the agreement with Seminole tribe and how voters react to an amendment relating to increased gambling. Whether the aspect of sports betting is involved, that could sway voters on an potential ballot initiative. This will be a contentious discussion with multiple parties.

Mississippi, which does not have racing, is often mentioned as a state with a high interest in sports betting. I am not sure if that includes future live racing. Horse racing is almost dormant in the states between Florida and Louisiana.

Frank Stronach is trying to improve the situation in California -- he operates tracks near San Francisco and Los Angeles -- with the breeding in the state. Santa Anita has been running short fields in recent years. I would imagine the Stronach Group, which now has a California division of sorts, based in Florida, would jump at the opportunity to put some type of sports betting in his tracks. An update with Cali: California sports betting bill unlikely for November ballot | Daily Racing Form

Ultimately, each state will be independent as to how it promotes the business in connection to horse racing. It may benefit the sport in some spots while having minimal or no influence in others. New Jersey racing should gain immediately. In any event, the sport needs to be prepared for a seismic different which could alleviate some issues but cause strain with others.

Although no firm opening date for sports betting at Monmouth Park has been confirmed by track officials, Memorial Day weekend could be shaping up as the tentative target.

On the operations side, the installment of bet-taking machinery and infrastructure, plus the training of staffers, are both on management’s ambitious to-do list. State legislators also must make sure the legal framework is solidified before the first tickets can be punched.

Another important component–an agreement outlining sports betting revenue sharing between the track and horsemen–is also not yet in place.

John Heims, Monmouth’s racing secretary and media relations director, emailed “TBD” in reply to a Tuesday query asking if an agreement existed and what percentage of sports betting revenue would go to fund purses. He also wrote that no exact date has been set for the track’s sports book to open.

Ha yeah I'm back, the Devils board here sorta disintegrated into a lot of nonsense so I migrated to another page, when this hit I was like, "Hey what happened to my horse racing dudes on HF!?!?!" I also no longer have a 9-5 office job, I'm a stay at home dad in fall/winter and a sous chef at a beach club in spring/summer so not nearly as much time for conversing.

Also tiz the season with the Triple Crown, managed to get a nice little bankroll off the early and late daily double at Monmouth on Sunday.

Confirmation below that Memorial Day is Opening Day, Drazin is in full speed ahead mode, they announced today they'd be taking the first bets at a soft open on the 28th. Also we had a great start to the season, MP opened gates for the first time on Derby Day, just over 20,000 people attended, not too shabby for our squalid 9 race card with a 75K overnight as the feature.

^ Good luck with all the personal endeavors. The family comes first.

A lack of sizeable exposure on commercial TV hurts the industry with the average sports fan. There is nothing like a simulcast facility, however. With the large gaps between races on an NBC-like broadcast, anyone with a short attention span would lose interest. Saturdays, especially, can be intoxicating with the various tracks running. I just hope things are not changed dramatically with the introduction of sports betting.

My one concern is that while we try to study programs and concentrate on racing, there will be a mix of sports fans cheering for the home team in the same area. We don't need that. Hopefully any changes will take that into account; separate areas if possible. One reason why I don't frequent casinos too often, give me the race parlor and the noises associated with it. Maybe at this juncture, it is nothing but aesthetics.

Still, I think horse racing can prosper from the recent ruling but of course that is dependent on how states enact laws.

‘Jersey Joe’ Bravo Named Winner Of 2018 Mike Venezia Award - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

The New York Racing Association has announced Joe Bravo as the 2018 recipient of the Mike Venezia Memorial Award, the prestigious honor awarded to jockeys who exemplify extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship.

The Venezia Award will be presented to Bravo on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, in a ceremony to follow the third race at Belmont Park. The award, established in 1989, is named in honor of jockey Mike Venezia, who died as a result of injuries he suffered in a spill in 1988 at Belmont Park. Venezia, a Brooklyn native, won more than 2,300 races during his 25-year career.

Belmont (New York):
  • One of the few major tracks operating this Wednesday.
  • Sloppy conditions led to some races being off the turf.
  • David Cohen won the opener with the second highest odds on the board and won the finale with the favorite. John Velazquez and Irad Ortiz, Jr. also won twice.
  • If nothing else, Junior Alvarado boosted his in-the-money mark at the meet with a 5 1-1-3 day.
  • Mike Luzzi wins again! At this meet, Luzzi has a better winning percentage than Luis Saez with one less win in 12 fewer rides. That's the best I could deliver.

Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Erik Barbaran put together one of the best nights for any jockey in recent history. He just finished a perfect night on 6 mounts. He went 6 6-0-0. Let that settle for a moment. In one win early, he was put up after a DQ. He also won the final four races on the card.

Thanks, made the change for the better, long hours, brutal commute, job I hated - wasn't good. I'm happier, in better shape, the kids actually see me and everyone's eating like a gourmet.

I hear you on the commercial TV thing but it's funny you mention the simulcast facility aspect - which I agree, I love it, I miss the old days of the NYC OTB's, I used to have to escort a female coworker so she could make her bets, well maybe that part wasn't that great but still, those places were unique. We are definitely a counter culture though with our own ways and language. It's intimidating walking into an OTB or even a simulcast room at a live track, I think today's youth are embracing it though. Granted Derby Day was total amateur hour, but I overhead a few of the kids actually talking about pace and drops/rises in class, rather than just picking names and numbers. There's definitely a subset of today's youth that are statistic and analytic driven as is proven by the popularity of daily fantasy gaming, which will also have a huge impact on how this all plays out.

Going back to NBC though, holy hell do they need to get out of the picture. Their coverage of the Derby was AWFUL. They bought the rights to not one , but two Graded Stakes events and didn't even show the races! What's the point? And every year they trot out the same fashion duo of Tara and Johnny to talk about hats and mint juleps, we get it, people wear hats and drink bourbon. When guys like Edzo are on they give great analysis that folks like us want, those two clowns give I dunno who what they want because the demographic that they appeal to is not sitting home in front of their TV waiting for a horse race on a Saturday evening.

I don't think you have to worry about the home team thing changing the dynamic, the way I see it is, I'm sitting at William Hill on a Sunday betting Belmont or whatever, following along with the Eagles, cheering as I normally do, plus whatever game I decided the bookmakers got wrong. There'll be horseplayers who are Jets, Giants, whatever fans doing the same thing, and my guess is you'll have a lot of football/baseball/hockey/basketball fans just rolling up early in the day to place their bets then going back to their mancaves or local watering holes to wait out the result, same as it is on Derby Day at just about every track and OTB, over the course of the day 15 to 20 thousand people stop in to place a few bets.

I am appreciative of the simulcast options rather than the intermittent drivel of the broadcasts as you described. A problem with the sport in that there is too much down time in between races for an actual TV broadcast limited to one track. the filler can be mind-numbing. Which is why a simulcast is superior entertainment and a higher quality production. And of course we have the option to turn our eyes to whatever track is ready to go.

The dissection through forms and programs may not be as useful to the younger crowd as gens past. It can be imposing to those who don't follow the sport. Even with that, I have a wily veteran friend who prefers looking at the horses and seeing their movements as they come on the track. He immediately tosses horses that appear wet. Feet of course, on turf especially, but that is better suited for the eyes at a track rather than through the TV feeds.

I forget who said it but someone described the Triple Crown as a circus (KY), a carnival (MD) and a horse race (NY). The Derby has come and gone. Now we have the spring-break atmosphere of the Preakness but the cards look good for both days at Pimlico. Belmont Stakes Day will be phenomenal -- New York has put together a good day of racing in recent years especially in case there isn't a Triple Crown winning possibility.

Yeah the all stakes card at Belmont has been phenomenal the past few years. And I agree, there is way too much downtime on cards like that but I think the producers can get creative, steal some tricks from TVG like the backtracks. Highlight good and bad trips, things like that. Also do you remember about 5 years or so ago they had that "Late Double" show for the end of the California tracks? They'd send hosts into the crowd, interview fans, get fan picks, have celebrities on to do picks, something like that would go over great with the younger crowd. Showing people of their generation having a good time at the track would probably get them out as well.

I don't watch TVG that much. If I am at a facility, I view the direct feeds. With that, I probably saw what you described but the content was lost on me. I am a 'net junkie more so than a TV viewer.

Keeneland has done a fantastic job of incorporating the younger audience while not losing that flavor which makes horse racing unique. Of course, the character of Keeneland is in itself different than the other venues. I don't want the sport to be ESPNified, dumbled down, in order to gain exposure.

Horses are the star attraction but they aren't human athletes who play once a week or more as the prop sports. Therefore, jockeys and even trainers should be advanced in the public spotlight. The owners, too, epecially celeb owners and even better athletes involved with the sport. A cute story was a horse named Gostisbehere who runs in Kentucky and Indiana. I mentioned it to a couple of NHL writers who were unaware. Small-time compared to the Nyquistses of the world but still added exposure in that regard can cause a younger eye or two to have an interest. Not so much in handicapping but with the availability of sports betting maybe the non-fan will bet based on the amusement and entertainment of a small bet with a quick result.

The Cali tracks are on the upswing under the tutelage of the Stronach Group. They know how to advance the sport. If Laurel gets the Breeders Cup, that will be a seismic boost for Maryland but also give Stronach the east coast presence -- outside of FL -- he/they desire.

With sports betting, I am sure there will be cross promotion of sports, advertising during game. IIRC, a main sponsor of the Blue Jackets is Scioto Downs.

Belmont (New York):
  • Trevor McCarthy was struggling mightily prior to today with just one win in 56 starts; however, he won twice in four starts. and now has a slightly lesser unimpressive mark of 60 3-9-2. at the meet.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Tyler Gaffalione made a rare trip to Maryland and was a perfect 2-for-2. Gaffalione became the fifth rider in North America to win 100 races in 2018.
  • The $.50 Pick 5 paid $13,000.50.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • The team of Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen won twice.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas won three of the final four races and was 8 3-2-1 on the day.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Bug Asa Espinoza won three consecutive mounts and was 5 3-1-0 on the day.
