I'd love for them to make *one* set for us set collectors. No inserts, autos, Holo GRFX, 1 of 1's, etc. Just plain cardboard, covering most every player in the league.

That's because they stopped making sets we *could* collect.

In the 70's, a set would often have 18 to 20 players from each team in it. If you collected the entire set, or just the team set, you had a real representation of who was on the team.

Nowadays, you get a handful of players from a team, and you get the same players in every single set. "Hey look gang, it's Nazzy, Bert, and Mo!". :shakehead

I'd love for them to make *one* set for us set collectors. No inserts, autos, Holo GRFX, 1 of 1's, etc. Just plain cardboard, covering most every player in the league.

If your lookin for a set to collect this year i'd suggest Upper Deck MVP, they have 400 something cards in their set they have a fair amount from each team, and they look good, plus you can get rookie cards in every other pack, thats what i've been buying :)

Me too. 10/11 for rookie cards now. It's a fun, inexpensive set that's great if you just want to collect.

EDIT: After 18 packs, I've got 12 rookie cards (plus a few other special inserts). Not a bad haul.

Corey Perry
Lee Stempniak
Petr Prucha
Alexander Steen
Alexander Perezhogin
Ryan Clowe
Mike Richards
Petteri Nokelainen
Yann Danis
Jim Howard
Chris Campoli
Robert Nilsson (special rookie breakthrough card)

Upper Deck MVP is a great looking set. The cards look magnificent, but the reality is that it is simply not worth much in comparison to Upper Deck Series 1 and others like SPx, Black Diamond, etc.

I bought a few packs of MVP just to see them...pulled a Dion Phaneuf rookie which books at $9 CDN in Canadian Sports Collector magazine. Phaneuf's UD Series 1 rookie card books at $30 CDN.

Speaking of Series 1, I've gone through the equivalent of probably 4-5 boxes, and I have yet to pull a Sidney Crosby RC. Has everybody else had this much trouble finding it?

It's a good set if you're not into it for "an investment". Hockey cards aren't an investment. An RRSP is an investment. Hockey cards are a hobby, something fun to do. Completing a set is great, because it gives you a sense of accomplishment. I don't know about you, but that's something I look for in a hobby.

Good luck completing a 600 card set that costs $10 a card.

If anyone has a Dennis Wideman from the Blues rookie out of the second Upper Deck set for 06 and doesn't want it I am interested. That is really the only card out of the whole set that I want. Send me a PM. Thanks

If you're in it to complete the set, then good for you. However, in today's market, it's all about rookie cards and inserts.

Anyway, I bought 2 boxes of 05-06 UD Series 2 ...highlites are...

Alexander Ovechkin YG RC :yo:
Thomas Vanek YG RC
Ryan Getzlaf YG RC
Martin St.Louis Game Jersey
Thomas Vanek Rookie Threads
Hannu Toivonen Stars In The Making
Alexander Steen Stars In The Making
Gilbert Brule Stars In The Making

Obviously the highest point is the Ovechkin rookie. It went straight from the pack into a hard screwdown case. Bids are starting on eBay for $150 US.

I'm a long-time collector myself (15+ years now) and I've recently bought a couple boxes of the 2005-06 Fleer Ultra set; I ended up 3 cards short of the full 200 regular card complement :madfire: . I wasn't upset by the rookies I got but not ecstatic either. They included:

Dallman
Jurcina
Keith
Barker
Jokinen
Parros
Ivanans
Hollweg
Holt
Skolney
Ballard
Clowe
Gorges
Helbling
Stewart (x2)
Nystrom
Steen
Howard

I was disappointed by the lack of regular cards in the set; there are only about 6-8 players per team. I miss the Bob Beers, Jim Hrivnaks, etc. Also in the boxes I received numerous inserts. However, it is the "jersey" cards that I have a question about. I know they have been out for a few years now, but what exactly is the appeal of these cards? If anything I find them less appealing than the others. I haven't checked prices on these cards ever either so I'm wondering what kind of value these cards hold. For example, in my couple boxes that I bought I got the following "jersey" cards:

Keith Tkachuk "Scoring Kings"
Brendan Shanahan "Scoring Kings"
Patrick Roy "Super Six" (also got the regular Patrick Roy "Super Six")
David Leneveu "Rookie Uniformity"

What approximate value do each of those cards have right now? Also what would the value difference be in my two Patrick Roy "Super Six" cards?

First, about player selection, you would enjoy the upcoming parkhurst, featuring around 16 players a team (Plus rookies).

The appeal of jersey cards is that you have a piece of a jersey that the player wore in a game. An average jersey card is worth about 6 dollars. Star players are worth 10-25. Jersey cards can be worth alot more depending on the print run.

The jersey one is probably worth about 20 dollars more.

Although if you want rookies with "value" the MVP rookies don't have much value.

Would anyone here be interested in BAP Draft Redemption cards of Steen, Perezhogin, or Novotny?

They are hand-numbered out of 100 but only about 40-60 will end up being redeemed, and the rest will be destroyed.

I'm not really collecting cards anymore and I don't really want to pay the $8 cdn shipping to get each card redeemed, but if any of you are interested let me know. The deadline is April 30.

In Quebec we are screwed over by our government. Redemptions are considered a lottery and our Lottery and Games Board has a monopoly on anything close to a lottery. I had to use a cousins' Ontario address to collect cards from Bowman's CHL set 2xxx. I forget the year. :madfire:

Yeah, I always thought that was weird how all the redemptions said 'except for Quebec residents'

Upperdeck will send redemptions to Quebec. I have been getting them. And they pay the shipping you just enter codes online. However Up[perdeck is very slow in sending the cards and have far to many cards as redemptions that should just be in regualr packs.

Hockey cards are not good investments. You will never make money off cards in the long run.

So my Eric Lindros rookie Score cards from 1990-91 are useless ;)

How about my two Mario Lemiuex Topps rookie cards?Perfect condition

That statement is exactly what is wrong with collecting cards today. It's no longer a hobby, it's an investment. A pack of nine cards is four bucks. I remember when a pack of 12 was two bucks.

When I collected, it was all about the thrill of ripping open a pack and getting your favourite player. Now, it's all about seeing how much money the card is worth, and collecting all of the "inserts," which used to be very rare.

Sigh. I miss the day when a set used to be 750 cards.

I remember when a pack of cards contained a really, really, really hard stick of pink gum and was 10 cents!!!

Now, I want to get back into collecting them but I can't justify paying 4 bucks or whatever the price is now a days to buy them...and then there's just soooo many different brands.

I don't even know when the rookie cards are rookie cards anymore without having to look up some fancy magazine!

I would love to buy a few packs to see if I could get Sidney Crosby rookie cards but I suspect that his rookie cards were printed and sold a couple of years ago already? Am I correct in this? If not, can someone point out how you recognize rookie cards and Sidney Crosby's in particular?

Did you know putting cards into a screwdown isn't a great idea but then again your selling it so it doesn't matter I guess. But yeah, if the card is in a screwdown for a long time, it damages the cards. Especially if you screw the screw on to tight. I heard some guy had a Jordan rc in a screw down case and he brought it to a show and he was going to sell it. The buyer ask to open the case to see the condition of the card and when he did, the jordan card was split apart.

Isn't one of the roy cards just an insert card while the other one has a jersey piece. I believe the jersey piece one is 1 per case and has a value of I believe $40.
