Somewhere on Uranus
Colorado defenceman Karlis Skrastins is the current leader at 471 games and counting. That`s still less than halfway to Doug Jarvis's 964 games, which shows how remarkable that 964 game record is. Skrastins in close to breaking the record for defencemen, which is held by Tim Horton (486).

Murray Murdoch was the first ironman; he never missed a game in his 11 year career, ending at 508. Andy Hebenton broke that record by playing 9 full 70-game seasons ending at 630. Unger broke that record and went to 914 games. Unger`s streak ended when Flames coach Al MacNeil wasn`t happy with his play so he kept Unger on the bench the entire game (why not just scratch him before the game and put another player in the lineup?) Jarvis broke that and went to 964.

Since then, Larmer came closest at 884 games (though he did miss a couple of playoff games) . That streak ended due to not being able to come to terms with Chicago and waiting to be traded. Craig Ramsey had a long streak with Buffalo of 776 games.

As far as who has held the longest active record through the years, that would be tough to find. I do remember that when Larmer`s streak ended, the next highest one was Ken Daneyko.

Andrew Coglino is at 796

This is the list going up to 1967. All the bolded names definitely held it, the others might have. I hate all the maybes, but until the NHL releases regular season gamesheets or player gamelogs, the maybes can't be confirmed or eliminated.

Pat Boutette is in many places listed as having played 611 consecutive games but that's not accurate. He was traded by the Leafs to Whalers during 1979-80 season on December 27th. Leafs played their 35th game of the season that night (Boutette played in that game) and overall Boutette only played 32 games with the Leafs that season. So he had missed three games up until that point so the streak had already ended in the fall of 1979. I'm not exactly sure what was the first of the three games he missed (it was one of the first 18 games but haven't been able to pin it more accurately) but I'm pretty sure the other two games he didn't play were the games on December 12th and 15th.

So Boutette's streak of 611 games is actually only two separate streaks of about 300 games each.

1917-18 22 Clint Benedict
1918-19 40 Clint Benedict
1919-20 64 Clint Benedict
1920-21 88 Clint Benedict
1921-22 112 Clint Benedict
1922-23 136 Clint Benedict
1923-24 158 Clint Benedict (streak ended March 1, 1923)

Georges Vezina became the new leader that same day, playing his 158th consecutive NHL game.

1923-24 159 Georges Vezina
1924-25 189 Georges Vezina
1925-26 190 Georges Vezina (streak ended December 1, 1925)

Ken Randall new leader with 111 consecutive games.

1925-26 130 Ken Randall (streak ended January 25, 1926)

Jake Forbes new leader as he played in his 98th consecutive game on January 25, 1926

1937-38 361 Cecil Dillon
1938-39 409 Cecil Dillon
1939-40 425 Cecil Dillon (streak ended on December 21, 1939 due to a cold)

Bill Thoms new leader, playing in his 239th consecutive game on December 21, 1939

1939-40 270 Bill Thoms (officially 47 out of 48 games in 39/40 but I checked every game for Chicago and he was on the roster for all 48 games) – Here I haven't looked into when his streak ended.
It started on December 25, 1934.
That is great work! Especially that you were able to get the exact dates that they started and ended.

With Georges Vezina, I just checked to see if anyone else had a full record after the 1924-25 and saw that nobody did. I thought that made him the first leader; but since Benedict was one game ahead because Ottawa played the Wanderers before the arena burnt down, he would be the first one

Wouldn't Reg Noble be ahead of Ken Randall after Vezina's ended? He last game missed was in the 19-19 season, so he would have been over 150 by that point.

Sweeney Schriner would be at least one game ahead of Thoms at the start of the 39-40, but if Shriner's missed games that year came before Dillon's, then he's out of luck. If Thoms official stats are incorrect, then that's how I missed him. Makes you wonder how many other errors there are on players official records.

Yes, I've seen Boutette listed with that 611 streak (apparently the fifth longest in history at that point), but if his games played stats with Toronto are correct, then that streak was only about half as long as reported.

His entry on Total NHL has the trade on Dec. 24 instead of the 27th, but even then he still be at least one game short.

An interesting note about the Billy Harris streak with the Islanders, which ended a few weeks before Unger's: he missed one game officially because of a foot injury the game before. But in the book Dynasty: The Oral History Of The New York Islanders, it sounds like it was actually Al Arbour's decision:

"He sat me out- at least he talked to me before the game. I had never missed a game, and he had broken my streak on purpose, just to prove to the team that personal records weren't important. Which I thought was pretty lame."

Here's one newspaper article from mid-December showing some stats. It's a free preview and the formatting is messed up but you can still see Boutette there listed with 25 games while some other Leafs players (Williams, McDonald, Butler, Burrows etc.) are at 28 games there, indicating Boutette has missed three games. So that would then mean the 27th is the correct date for the trade.

https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/43139415/

Also, if the trade happened on 24th, then the streak has also still ended that season since from that on Whalers played 48 games that season and Boutette is listed with 47. And if the trade happened on 27th, then those game totals do match.

I'm curious why Hall's 502 game streak ended since you did say he did appear in the 503rd game? I might be misunderstanding this or maybe there's some information that I'm not aware of, but I didn't think there was any condition that they player had to start or complete the game.

I was at the game where Garry Unger's streak ended. It was a real horsepoop thing for Al McNeil to do since the game was in st. Louis where Unger played 662 of the streak. years later when I worked in the Blues press box, McNeil was still with the Flames and would come to stl for some games and it made me sick to see him up close.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Glenn Hall's 508 consecutive games by a goalie

The late-60s and early-70s are a mess to figure out. The only certainty is that Gary Bergman held it at one point, with literally over a dozen players who may have been the leader before and after him.

At the start of the 72-73 season it was definitely Garry Unger, so it went:

Garry Unger
Craig Ramsay
Doug Jarvis
Steve Larmer
Ken Daneyko
Trevor Linden

The late-90s were when I started to lose interest in the NHL, so I don't really care beyond that.

the henrik sedin start date is not correct. his streak actually began on march 21, 2004.

so he was always two weeks behind bouwmeester and therefore was never the consecutive games played leader.

I didn´t recheck from papers, but I have in my notes that Thompson´s streak was 306 games. Around late January he suffered what was called "nervous breakdown" in papers. First replaced by Percy Jackson and later NHL´s own substitute goalie Wilf Cude. Thompson came back somewhere in mid February.

Overall yet again impressive work.

Schriner's streak ended on November 20, 1939 - Scratched

the henrik sedin start date is not correct. his streak actually began on march 21, 2004.
so he was always two weeks behind bouwmeester and therefore was never the consecutive games played leader.

Thanks, you are right. I changed it.

Thanks Sanf, you are correct. The streak began on February 9, 1932. I changed and corrected it.

Georges Vezina should be the leader from 1917-18 thru the first game of the 1925-26 season. Your table lists Clint Benedict. 1917-18 NHL season after the Westmount Arena fire the Wanderers forfeited the scheduled game 1-0 to the Canadiens and departed from the league. So the standings show the Canadiens with a W-L record for 22 games whereas the players only played 21 games(those who played the complete season). Creates an illusion that Vezina missed a game when in fact it is simply the league balancing the standings.
