# of Canadians among the top 50 scoring leaders, by selected years:

'70-'71 - 49/50
'75-'76 - 50/50
'81-'82 - 45/50
'86-'87 - 39/50
'92-'93 - 33/50
'98-'99 - 21/50
'07-'08 - 23/50
'16-'17 - 18/50

Among the top 25 scoring leaders, it's gone from everybody in the early '70s to 8/25 Canadians last season ('16 - '17).

I think we can deduce a lot of interesting things from this. What does everyone think?

I don't know how much has changed in the last 20 years, really. Look at this season. Take your top 20 guys:

2018 - 10/20
1997 - 10/20

Not a lot has changed. If you want to see when the shift started it is before this:

1996 - 11/20
1995 - 12/20
1994 - 13/20
1993 - 11/20
1992 - 14/20
1991 - 15/20
1990 - 17/20
1989 - 15/20

And then from the 1980s it certainly didn't get any worse. I think about half of the best players in the NHL are still Canadian, and it really hasn't changed much in the last 20 years.

1st and 2nd all-star selections year by year
2017 - 6/12
2016 - 7/12
2015 - 8/12
2014 - 7/12
2013 - 7/12
2012 - 5/12
2011 - 4/12
2010 - 5/12
2009 - 4/12
2008 - 5/12
2007 - 9/12
2006 - 5/12

In total, there have been 71/144 1st and 2nd team all-stars that were Canadian since the lockout. That is one short of half.........so 50% then.

1990 - 11/12 were Canadian, and the only non-Canadian is Brett Hull if you want to count him as such.

1980 - 11/12.......the only non-Canadian is Salming. Basically the European invasion in the early 1990s changed things but it didn't get the results I am sure most thought would happen. I remember the early 2000s there was talk that Europeans would be dominating the league by now, instead we've seen Canadians stay about the same but a push with Americans since.

Come back in 10 years, if Canadians aren't winning any awards by then, then that will be telling.
