The Rangers announced a big move on Wednesday involving a couple top flight offensive wingers on the down side of their careers, but still star players. It was announced that New York sent LW Paul Kariya along with a 5th round draft pick to Buffalo for RW Jaromir Jagr and $1M cash.

"It's a somewhat risky move, for sure. There have been rumblings that Jagr has been offered a large contract to play in Russia and there is a distinct possibility that he could play overseas next season," said GM Sean Gaffney. "Kariya was our highest paid player at about $6.5M and is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent following the 2008-09 season. Absolute worst case scenario [Jagr leaving for Russia], we'll have freed up $6.5 million off of our payroll, added $1M to our bank account, and we'll have financial flexibility to make 'Plan B' moves. We are hopeful, however, that Jaromir will donning the red, white, and blue at Madison Square Garden next season."

If Jagr stays in North America, he could be part of one of the most offensively explosive lines in the HFNHL, along with returning stars Ilya Kovalchuk and reigning Art Ross trophy winner Marc Savard. The team could also decide to play the stars on seperate lines, deepening the lineup. RW was an area of concern for the Rangers heading into the offseason, with Cory Stillman and Petr Prucha at the top of the depth chart. The departure of Kariya enables Pierre-Marc Bouchard to be moved to LW. The club will look to add a 2nd line center through free agency or trade. A defensive defenseman is also on New York's wish list.
