He touched it with a high stick - if he touched the puck again, the play would be dead.

In hindsight, he should have touched it because it seems everyone was expecting him to kill the play.
That’s like the least of the problems in this clip lol

He had multiple options:

1. Touch the puck and kill the play
2. Backcheck normally and cover the lane they used for the breakout pass
3. Keep skating to the bench and have a guy jump in to prevent the odd man rush from happening
4. Quit skating mid-play, leaving a wide open passing lane while slowly gliding to the bench preventing the fresh guy from joining the play.

He chose the absolute worst option.
