One took over a team that was trying to rebuild but hadn't drafted good enough so it was basically starting a new rebuild and has drafted incredibly well and done well with free agents they are just incredibly young and lack a great coach.

The other hand picked his team and was able to decide of they were going to be competitive or not. People were really confused with his draft because he left so many great young talent and took weird older role players. Then he let his top UFA signing go back to Russia and traded a few pieces at garbage prices. So his roster management has been god awful to where in a very soon year Vegas will just burn and not have much young talent to help and deciding to be competitive this year will look good for him for a few years when they start losing because at least they had a few good years to start the franchise.

Bottom line very soon within a couple years these teams records will switch and Arizona will be a top 10 team and LV will have its first rebuild.

Did you just unironically prove OP’s point?

It's not useless. It's just one part of the puzzle. There are more stats than corsi.

None of the analytics people I know think Hjalmarsson is particularly great. To blame Chayka's lack of success on only looking at a calculator is unfounded.

And saying the numbers are useless is just as silly as only looking at a calculator.

Everyone is always quick to jump on the failure of so called "analytics teams" like the Panthers and Coyotes, yet remain silent on Pittsburgh hiring a "nerd" right around the time they hired Sullivan, going on to win two Cups, or the success of Sutter's corsi-centric system in LA.

The truth is, nobody is an "analytics team." Every team uses them and no team uses them exclusively.

Hjalmarsson is a fantastic chance suppressor, but he doesn't generate chances per say. It seems both him and Vlasic have been declining in the chance suppression metrics as of late.

Winning is so underrated.

You play to win the game, you don't just play to play it.

Making a habit of winning will always be the best method of building great players and great teams.

Just saying... so much for all the experts.

I'm a huge fan of what McPhee did... holding on to depth is looking pretty smart... injuries hit and did not miss a beat.

Waive Hunt they said hahaha

Because building a team by computers is dumb and hockey isn't a static sport like baseball, it's a fluid transition sport.

Chayka should be axed.

I actually liked what McPhee did last year(collecting a bunch of younger assets) but am surprised how well the team is playing now. Bad thing for Vegas is now they have a shot at the playoffs turning some of their other assets(Neil and Perron to be exact) to young prospects/picks goes down the drain

Looks like HF got another one wrong.

Why? Did Chayka have the opportunity to pick his team through an expansion draft? It takes time to turn a roster over. You can't really compare GMGM to Chayka, GMGM was handed the best situation for a new team ever where as Chayka inherited a mess and is further handcuffed by ownership. It will take 3-5 more years before we can begin to say that Chayka's plan failed.

But it didn't take any time to say he was great.

How do you know Chayka "built a team by computers"? If you look through the list of players that Chayka has acquired they aren't all analytical darlings. I would take Chayka over Chiarelli every day of the week and twice on Sundays, at least the Coyotes don't have a slew of awful contracts. They are still a young team that hasn't figured out everything yet.

Neal and Perron are both 29, and as they lose a step, it won’t affect their game nearly as much as players that rely on speed (they are puck possession cyclers)

GMGM could sign them both to 3-5 year contracts and I wouldn’t mind one bit.

On the other hand, Chayka traded a top 10 pick last offseason, and generally made a number of "win now" offseason moves for Stepan, Hjalmarsson, Demers, etc.

If you trade a high pick and focus on win now moves, your team better actually improve. Otherwise it shows you did a poor job of assessing where your team was actually at, the value of the guys you were bringing in, etc - which makes up the half of what your job is as a good GM, doing those assessments properly.

"But Chayka has to deal with a rebuild and had to draft"

Guess what? The Devils were in far worse shape and are also winning.

"Vegas has a better coach"

Hynes isn't exactly a world burning coach either.

How many more excuses are needed? The Coyotes are a dumpster fire. Even the Canucks, who a lot of people said were worse on paper, have a better record. This is a league built around results and nothing else. He's had long enough, and there was ground work there; it may have not been the very best, but enough where the team shouldn't be as bad as they currently are. Chayka may understand analytics, but he seems to have no idea how to run a team. He's better off being an assistant GM than anything.

How do you think McPhee is better when he let so many teams off of the hook and in my opinion, he tried to create a team filled with trade pieces to be moved this year at the deadline and build through the draft with high picks? He’s failed at losing easily as much as Chayka failed at winning.

I haven't watched Vegas much if at all. Congrats to the organization on their success to date. One GM has a little bit of experience over the other one and it shows. I too would give a fair amount of credit to Gallant but then again who hired him?

Keep waiting for Vegas to go in a downward spiral but they seem to be taking their name the Golden Knights and everything it is supposed to stand for pretty seriously. Kudos to them.

Arizona has some nice pieces and I expected more out of them.

Vegas is playing great, but McPhee and the franchise is going to regret missing a top 15 pick from this draft. It's a magical season for them, but they still really need to build a young talent base.

That’s not the point of the thread. It is not to compare the job both have done, but to point out how wrong the general consensus on this board can be. It was not the point I made, but nevertheless, it was the point.
