One took over a team that was trying to rebuild but hadn't drafted good enough so it was basically starting a new rebuild and has drafted incredibly well and done well with free agents they are just incredibly young and lack a great coach.
The other hand picked his team and was able to decide of they were going to be competitive or not. People were really confused with his draft because he left so many great young talent and took weird older role players. Then he let his top UFA signing go back to Russia and traded a few pieces at garbage prices. So his roster management has been god awful to where in a very soon year Vegas will just burn and not have much young talent to help and deciding to be competitive this year will look good for him for a few years when they start losing because at least they had a few good years to start the franchise.
Bottom line very soon within a couple years these teams records will switch and Arizona will be a top 10 team and LV will have its first rebuild.
It's not useless. It's just one part of the puzzle. There are more stats than corsi.
None of the analytics people I know think Hjalmarsson is particularly great. To blame Chayka's lack of success on only looking at a calculator is unfounded.
And saying the numbers are useless is just as silly as only looking at a calculator.
Everyone is always quick to jump on the failure of so called "analytics teams" like the Panthers and Coyotes, yet remain silent on Pittsburgh hiring a "nerd" right around the time they hired Sullivan, going on to win two Cups, or the success of Sutter's corsi-centric system in LA.
The truth is, nobody is an "analytics team." Every team uses them and no team uses them exclusively.
Just saying... so much for all the experts.
I'm a huge fan of what McPhee did... holding on to depth is looking pretty smart... injuries hit and did not miss a beat.
Waive Hunt they said hahaha
Looks like HF got another one wrong.
But it didn't take any time to say he was great. Why? Did Chayka have the opportunity to pick his team through an expansion draft? It takes time to turn a roster over. You can't really compare GMGM to Chayka, GMGM was handed the best situation for a new team ever where as Chayka inherited a mess and is further handcuffed by ownership. It will take 3-5 more years before we can begin to say that Chayka's plan failed.
How do you know Chayka "built a team by computers"? If you look through the list of players that Chayka has acquired they aren't all analytical darlings. I would take Chayka over Chiarelli every day of the week and twice on Sundays, at least the Coyotes don't have a slew of awful contracts. They are still a young team that hasn't figured out everything yet.Because building a team by computers is dumb and hockey isn't a static sport like baseball, it's a fluid transition sport.
Chayka should be axed.
I actually liked what McPhee did last year(collecting a bunch of younger assets) but am surprised how well the team is playing now. Bad thing for Vegas is now they have a shot at the playoffs turning some of their other assets(Neil and Perron to be exact) to young prospects/picks goes down the drain
