There`s been some discussion in another thread about how there seems to be no database of past voting results for NHL awards. But that doesn`t mean we can`t create one here. My collection of year-end magazines/hockey news goes back to `79, and while it`s not complete I could print the results I have and hopefully some other members here can fill in the missing years or maybe even the years before `79.

So I`ll start off with the results from 1978-79 and if you guys are interested then you can provide some other years` results and we can hopefully build a somewhat rudimentary database of past results here. If nobody`s interested then the thread can always drop to the bottom of the page. No harm done.

Hart Trophy Voting 1978-79:

1- B. Trottier 201
2- G. Lafleur 84
3- M. Dionne 47
4- D. Potvin 46
5- M. Palmateer 18
6- S. Savard 13
7- D. Herron 7
7- B. Salming 7
7- M. Bossy 7
10- D. Edwards 6

The point to remember about the Hart is that technically it`s the most valuable player and not necessarily the best player. For example here three goalies made the top ten, but the two who were voted to the 1st and 2nd All-Star team ( Dryden and Resch) didn`t.

Speaking of Dryden, I was scanning through the results of the other awards that year and noticed he actually received a vote for the Lady Byng. Has that ever happened before?

Thank you for that info.

I am in the process of sending a letter to the NHL to see if I can get access to the all time results.

Excellent idea. I'll post whatever I can find here.

1993 HART
1. Mario Lemieux, Pittsburgh Penguins (49-1-0) = 248
2. Doug Gilmour , Toronto Maple Leafs (0-29-12)= 99
3. Pat Lafontaine, Buffalo Sabres (1-12-11)= 52
4. Adam Oates, BOSTON BRUINS (0-6-10) = 28
5. Pierre Turgeon, NY Islanders (0-2-6) = 12
6. Teemu Selanne, Winnipeg Jets (0-0-5) = 5
7. Chris Chelios, Chicago Blackhawks (0-0-3) = 3
8. Steve Yzerman, Detroit Red Wings (0-0-2) = 2
9. Eric Lindros, Philadelphia Flyers (0-0-1) = 1

From: http://groups.google.ca/group/rec.s...+voting+results&rnum=4&hl=en#27526dff5fdca7c6. Can't say how accurate it is, but it looks legit and the source is the 6/18/93 Boston Globe. It says that there are only first, second and third place votes (as opposed to the five votes writers get today). When did that change happen?

1990 HART
1. Mark Messier (EDM) 29-24-10 = 227
2. Ray Bourque (BOS) 29-26-2 = 225
3. Brett Hull (STL) 4-9-33 = 80

Extremely close race, Messier beats out Bourque by a small margin. Bourque would have been the first defenceman since Orr to win the Hart. (Source: http://groups.google.ca/group/rec.s...+voting+yzerman&rnum=5&hl=en#6a396c95008f6e9e). Unfortunately it only has the top three.

1996 HART
1. Mario Lemieux, PIT 439 34-10-5-1-1
2. Mark Messier, NYR 275 10-15-10-6-2
3. Eric Lindros, PHI 213 2-17-7-12-3
4. Jaromir Jagr, PIT 156 5-3-10-10-5
5. Sergei Fedorov, DET 68 0-3-6-4-5
(Source: http://groups.google.ca/group/alt.s...voting+yzerman&rnum=10&hl=en#58c23b39c006e067.)

1982 was the first and, as far as I know, only unaninmous Hart (Gretzky).

1988-89

1) W. Gretzky (40-22-1) 267
2) M. Lemieux (18-27-16) 187
3) S. Yzerman (5-14-42) 109
4) P. Roy (0-0-2) 2
5) J. Mullen (0-0-1) 1
5) C. Chelios (0-0-1) 1

I vividly remember that season and there was a lot of debate about which one of Gretzky, Lemieux or Yzerman deserved the Hart. Looking at those numbers it`s remarkable how far ahead those three were over everyone else. I`m not Lemieux`s biggest fan but I think he truly deserved the award that year; and it`s ridiculous that two of the writers didn`t even have him in the top three.

Also, this was the year that Brian Leetch won the Calder over Trevor Linden. Joe Sakic had a pretty decent rookie year but only finished tied for 8th. Some of the future "stars" who finished ahead of Sakic: Peter Sidorkiwiecz (sp), Daniel Marois and Greg Hawgood.

If you're meaning goalies (and later), at least Fuhr got 15 points (0-2-0-0-1) for Byng in 1995/96 and 52 points for Hart that year as well.
