Half mile 46.6 was a fair pace. Hernandez gets the jump and the ground saving, winning move early and squeezes by the 12 on the lead.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 12: The 150th running of the Kentucky Derby was won by Mystik Dan (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Kenny McPeek) in a 3-way photo finish which was the first such result in the race since 1947. This was the first Derby decided by a nose since 1996. Approximately 156,000 attended. The winning jockey-trainer duo also won the Kentucky Oaks, a first such pairing in history. Mystik Dan improved to 7 3-1-1. He won on a muddy track at Oaklawn in the Southwest but then finished third in the Arkansas Derby on a fast track.
  • Among the records smashed:
    • $446 million bet in 4-day Derby week
    • $320 million bet on Derby card.
    • $210 million bet on the Derby.
    • Highest TV ratings since 1989.
