Gretky, Lafleur in a car accident?

This is something I read form Al Strachan's new book, I think its called "8 goals that changed the game". In this book he talks about a car accident that Guy Lafleur got into in '81 and how the car flipped over. I'm not sure if this is the same accident that changed Lafleurs career and forced him to slow down but according to Strachan the accident, which was a big secret, had a passenger in it named Wayne Gretzky. Something that never has come out in public. My question is that if this is true then why were they in the same car? They weren't teammates. All I can think is that it was in the '81 Canada Cup when they were teammates. Does anyone know of this if it is true or not?

Must have been Canada Cup 81 when they were line mates. Guy wrongly )) described it as "the car spun" at the Heritage Game 2 years ago when the story slipped out. Its not the Hgwy 20 accident (rumoured that Picard was with him) when he nearly tore off his ear. As for changing him - hell he led the Habs in scoring 8 out of his last 10 years (out of 13) with the Habs including his last 2 years and was 2 and 3rd with many less games played the other 2 times - pretty consistent).

I read it the other day too and was waiting for Bucky to post this one day. This story is in the "Too many men goal" chapter.

Its not clear who was driving but I presume it was Guy and 99 was sitting in the back seat.

What other stories lurk out there. The Canadian media is unbelieveable. Its Damien Cox and throw the rest out.

I have never heard anything about Gretzky being in the flower's car. I believe you refer to the accident in which the future viagara pitchman was widely rumoured to have been pounded. Thank heavens no innocent children were on the road as the vehicle careened toward that fateful lightpost.

It is almost certainly about the accident that almost killed the Flower (when he had part of his ear ripped off by a post going through the windshield), but I have never heard about Gretzky having anything to do with this. Maybe Strachen was still drunk (after his being fired by Hockey Night In Canada-or maybe THIS was WHY he was fired!), or he just once again made something up for controversy.

If anyone has the TRUE story, I'd like to read it.

It is a good book though no question even if it does come form the sometimes weary Al Strachan. I just thought that Lafleur did have a reckless lifestyle at times, and he never did apparently treat his body like a temple, but if Strachan is writing this it cant just be gossip. He'd be sued. That's why I thought it had to be true.

I have heard, from a member of the media who I will not name, that some players and coaches despise Strachan so much that they lie to him so that he reports stuff that isn't true. They make him look like a complete jackass. I wouldn't trust anything coming from Strachan.

The only accident involving lafleur that I'm aware of was the Hwy.20 one already referred to. My understanding was that he'd had dinner with Robert Picard upstairs at Thurdays'. They finished off the evening with a few after dinner drinks, Guy got behind the wheel when he shouldn't have and the night resulted in an accident that was a pretty close call for Lafleur. I've heard it said that the Mtl. police did Guy a favor and made out a report that mentionned neither a passenger and administered no alcohol test. At the time there was no question that he'd been drinking but I can't remember how it was reported . The bit about a young lady in the vehicule with him is rumour that may be just that. I've never heard anything involving he and Gretzky. I also think that linking the accident to a physical decline in his play is myth. The team was going downhill, he had lost a bit of his passion, he was slowing down a touch, he had no comfort zone with his coach, Lemaire wasn't doing him any favors, shake it all in a bag and you get the result. It's never just one thing as much as we'd like it to be. You know,it seems that if Lafleur's one incident is reported a thousand times,it happened a thousand times and he has a reckless lifestyle.
