He's simply too far back for most people to think about. My grandfather isn't old enough to have seen him in his prime, so there is hardly even an oral history to bouy him.
I could see that argument against Broda or Hainsworth, but against Fuhr, who, between the 89-90 season and 95-96 was traded four times losing his job to Bill Ranford, Felix Potvin, Dominic Hasek and Kelly Hrudey (Although in Hrudey's case, it was more that he failed to steal Hrudey's job.) and served three different stints in the minors. Fuhr's career as a starter would have been done at age 27 if it wasn't for Keenan. That's alot worse than Benedict's one horrible season. And want to talk money, look at Benny's stats in the playoffs with the Maroons. Vote for Benedict. can't really say who to add next, though. I've never been big on Belfour, but it may be his time.
Gerry Cheevers, Eddie Giacomin, Vladmir Dzurilla or Viktor Konovalenko are all good nominees as well.
Think Gardiner is better but voted Benedict to keep Fuhr from winning. Bad enough billy Smith came in at #13. Add Cheevers.
Yeah, I went with Benedict as a vote against Fuhr. (And I landed Fuhr in the ATD). I think there are a couple other goalies better than Fuhr. I think Johnny Bower is the best goalie on the list, but he's going nowhere in this round.
Add Belfour What is he 3rd all time wins and top 4 in alltime shutouts? Won a cup and other major trophies
