Definitely Horton. As good as Stevens was defensively, Horton was better. High-end skills, too: strong skater, shooter and puck mover.

Add Claguehorn.

Agree with both parts

I voted for Tim Horton.

Add Brian Leetch.

Some support for Leetch:

- 2 Norris Trophy wins.
- 1 Conn Smythe Trophy win.
- 5 All-Star Team selections (2 1st-team and 3 2nd-team).
- 1 Stanley Cup.
- 1000 points and 250 goals.
- highest ranked defenseman on The Hockey News Top 100 Players of All-Time list not currently on the voting list.

Voted for the great two-way defenseman Dit Clapper, although I probably should have voted for Horton so Stevens doesn't win this early. Add Cleghorn.

Langway was no better than the 3rd best defenseman in the Patrick division during the early-to mid 80's.
This would be during his back to back Norris wins right?

His 82-83 win is the lowest ppg ever by a Norris winning defenceman, and his 83-84 win is only above his previous year and Doug Harvey in 59-60. But noting that this happened in years where the NHL's leading scorer put up 196 and 205 points makes it all the more impressive.

LOL, he was great, but greatest ever no way; that's a major exaggeration.

I'll cede that he may not be the greatest. But, he is at the level of defensive excellence where no one can be said to be definatively better. Yes, one could argue for Doug Harvey, but, can one really compair the two? Doug Harvey never had to block slapshots from curved blades. Or at least, not until late in his career.

To me, Rod Langway is the anti-Paul Coffey. Langway is to defence what Coffey is to offence, and conversly, Langway is to offence what Coffer is to defence. And if Paul Coffey is #9, then Rod Langway deserves #14.

Stevens was always very good but wasn't great until he went to the Devils. Horton gets the nod here.

Mark Howe and Denis Potvin were both better all-around defenseman than Langway.

All-around, maybe... Potvin is already on the list, and unfortunatly, I only saw Howe at the end of his career and IMO, Langway was better able to maintain a high level of play.

All-around game is what matters.

The gap between the offensive games of Potvin and Howe was far greater than the gap between Langway's edge defensively over the other two.

Howe got injured often later in his career, but he still played at a high level into his late 30's. Langway was about finished at 35.
