The University of Minnesota may have 3 top 10 picks (and 4 first rounders) from '06 on the ice this fall. Erik Johnson, Phil Kessel and Kyle Okposo (with David Fischer at the bottom of the first). What other teams look to have solid drafts?

How does this year's Gophers draft potential rank with other great tream drafts of the past?

1979 draft

Brandon Wheat Kings

Laurie Boschman - 9th
Brian Propp - 14th
Brad McCrimmon - 15th
Ray Allison - 18th

Mike Perovich - 23rd

This is a little different, since Dynamo is a club with teams at several different age levels. In all likelihood most of those guys probably played for at least 2 teams.

Still an impressive feat though.

a couple of years ago the salmon arm silverbacks (bcjhl) had two first rounders (zajac and chucko) and at least one more. i don't think that's happened before.

7 players from the 03-04 London knights team have been drafted. Wideman, Perry, and Syvret have already played NHL games.

that's not a single draft though right?

also, in 1982, the kitchener rangers had:
2. Brian Bellows (MIN)
5. Scott Stevens (WAS)
13. David Shaw (QUE)
and two later rounders.

i thought maybe one of Al MacInnis (15th in '81) or Paul Coffey (6th in '80) were in that draft too but obviously i was wrong. that's a pretty nice trio of defensemen (though coffey never played with the other two).

correct me iff i'm wrong but isn't that kinda like including the Canadian under-18 team in the discussion?

also aren't teams like dynamo and modo professional teams and thus also shouldn't count given the amateur requirement?

I think Bellows was an '81 draftee, wasn't he? That was an amazing team - they also had Tucker who was drafted #31 overall in 1983.

not according to hockeydb.

Unfortunately, i was born in 1982 and thus didn't yet have the perspective necessary to fully appreciate that team at the time. did you get a chance to see them CG?

LOL - and you expect me to admit that, after saying you were BORN in 1982?

Seriously though... I did see them play, and they were as good as you would imagine. It was a special team, and you knew that there were a few future superstars on the ice.

I don't think I'll ever forget the sound of MacInnis' slapshot echoing through the Aud. You just don't get the same effect with the composite sticks.

Three times MODO has got two players in the same first round. In 1991 with Forsberg and Näslund, in 93 with Sundström and Eriksson and finally in 99 with Sedin and Sedin.

They're not exactly amateur but I figured it was worth mentioning anyway, craziness.
