Grand Valley State U and Davenport U spring graduations this weekend booked Van Andel Arena a year in advance every year. Griffins are always forced to go around their schedule if they make the playoffs and get home dates in the first round are usually not the most ideal days.

It was surprising listening to Ken Holland's interview with Art Regner where talked about Grand Rapids and said "when they get eliminated from the playoffs". Definitely sounded like he's not expecting a Calder Cup repeat this year.

This does not help us any:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League today announced that Grand Rapids Griffins forward Eric Tangradi has been suspended for one (1) game as a consequence of a cross-checking incident in a playoff game vs. Manitoba on Apr. 26.

Tangradi was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 28.1 (supplementary discipline). He will miss Game 5 of the Central Division Semifinals, Monday (Apr. 30) vs. Manitoba.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Sunday reassigned forward Dylan Sadowy (SAD-oh-way) to the Grand Rapids Griffins from the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye.

In his second year pro, the 22-year-old Sadowy appeared in 13 regular season games with the Griffins in 2017-18 and tallied nine penalty minutes. As a rookie in 2016-17, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound winger banked six points (4-2—6) and 18 PIM in 38 regular season appearances with Grand Rapids and was a part of the team’s Calder Cup championship.

Sadowy logged 29 points (12-17—29), a plus-nine rating and 20 PIM in 39 contests with Toledo this season and tied for second on the club with five power play tallies. In his Kelly Cup Playoff debut, Sadowy adds one assist in five games, as the Walleye recorded a four-game sweep of Indy in the opening round and currently trail Fort Wayne 1-0 in the Central Division Finals.

Sadowy also competed in six games with Toledo last season and picked up four points (1-3—4).

Prior to turning professional, the Brampton, Ontario, native played four seasons (2012-16) in the Ontario Hockey League, where he totaled 188 points (116-72—188), a plus-23 rating and 245 PIM in 258 regular season games.

San Jose’s fifth choice, 81st overall, in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Sadowy was acquired by the Red Wings in May 2016.

The Griffins host Manitoba in the winner-take-all Game 5 of the Central Division Semifinals on Monday at 7 p.m.

Evgeny Svechnikov: 23 points in 57 AHL regular season games. 1 point in 5 playoff games. Let's hope he has a big offseason, because this was a lost year for him.

he didn't look to bad in his NHL games (not good to be honest, either), so i thought with going back to the AHL he would thrive. Guess what...

I had very high hopes for him, but this season was bad. Looking at his hightlights from cape breton, something in his game has changed. he is not as dynamic anymore, and i'm afraid he won't make it. Lets hope that he'S proves us wrong

Maybe he needs a change of scenary. Perhaps a trade to the canes?

I dont know how good "Geekie" is but he sure put up good numbers with Rasmussen this whl playoffs who the canes own.

Don't want to write him off considering he looked pretty good in his call-up and showed last year he can produce in the AHL. But I'll be pretty worried if he doesn't come into camp looking hungry for an NHL job.

Pretty bad move in hindsight, wonder what players we could've had around that pick instead of Sadowy

We ended up having 4 3rd rounders last year with one of those picks being 2 spots (Kotkansalo) after what we gave up for Sadoway, 1 10 spots later (Zablocki), 1 14 spots later (Gallant), and 1 19 spots later (Petruzzelli). So you are probably looking at the same players and level of players.
Draft 2017

And there is a less than 30% chance a 3rd rounder becomes an NHL player. It was a good gamble.

San Jose traded the pick to Arizona who drafted who drafted MacKenzie Entwistle with it. I don't know anything about any of the players drafted after him in the 3rd. Rasmussen's teammate, Morgan Geekie was drafted 2 picks ahead of him and the Wings drafted Kotkansalo 2 picks after him with the Vanek pick. Geekie looks to be the best of them but the Wings wouldn't have been able to draft him with their own 3rd round pick.

Thanks, sounds like not too much was wasted anyways. I liked the move at the time anyways, interesting to look back at it and see who was available

2017 was a weak draft. This years 3rd rounders should have more potential.

@GrGriffins, unlike the Griffins blueline, it looks like there could be a lot of turnover at forward. Looks like Smith, Ehn and apparently Pope will be on the team next season, while Tangradi, Street, Elson and Lorito are UFA's, Puempel is eligible for Group VI UFA status and maybe Nastasiuk doesn't get qualified. Of those six guys who are or could become free agents, any indicators so far on if any of them are locks to return or move on?
