Showcasing guys who can't normally get into the lineup isn't really a thing. It's just a dumb media narrative that reporters use because "OMG THIS COULD MEAN A TRADE!!!!" is more exciting than "hey, Goodrow just got into a game finally either for line shuffling purposes, because someone needed a day off, or just because we have to toss our 21st-23rd men on the roster the occasional bone instead of just leaving them in the pressbox for 6 straight months"

This is right up there with guys reporting "anonymous sources" or turning some other reporter's idle speculation into "rumor: team might be looking to do X" in the pantheon of lazy media ****-posting.

If a guy's getting "showcased" he's already in the lineup. And if he's not good enough to get into the lineup, he's in the minors.

No way are you going to make a roster move to "showcase" your 13th forward just so you can get a 7th for him instead of futures.

I'm willing to bet it was just because it was vs Anaheim, who as we know can get pretty goon-y. Barclay is more scrappy than carpenter. Case closed.

I think showcasing does happen, but it's not generally in the case of a minor leaguer like Goodrow. It's more common in the case of a guy like Douglas Murray who definitely should have been scratched in 2013 over Braun and Demers who were frequently in the press box. Fans speculated that he was being showcased and he was traded shortly after.

Any time a guy gets into the lineup when he "shouldn't" the fans and media chalk it up to showcasing. Sooner or later if you keep making that prediction it's going to either be right or look right. Still doesn't necessarily make it true.

Fans always use “but showcasing!” as an excuse for their coach playing bad players.

or in times like this. It wasn't totally unreasonable to play Goodrow. Maybe he was a bit more physical/aggressive than Carpenter since they're facing Anaheim. Maybe Carpenter was just a bit banged up and DeBoer wanted to give him a night off. Maybe it was just decided that after sitting in the press-box for the first 12 games he probably should get some real action instead of just being a practice warrior.

There are lots of reasonable possibilities for why Goodrow was put into the lineup. But those aren't as fun as "but showcasing!" so they can dream on trading some expendable depth piece for Ryder, Halak, and a 2nd. So those thoughts get brushed aside and we play the showcasing game all over again.

Hedican was talking up Goodrow (and Donskoi) the entire game while talking down the entire team. He also led to the tying goal.

Good call coach.
