Brought in RH shot hockey mercenary Ilya Kovalchuk on a 1-year deal. Brought back Patrick Maroon because his fit with the organization and city off the ice and on the ice with McDavid at that price point makes some sense. We brought back Letestu at a bargain, he's a useful utility player as a faceoff ace, PK, and another PP RH shot option that McDavid and Draisaitl have fed in abundance. Pretty thrilled to have acquired Dougie Hamilton and think our defense has a solid chance at rebounding into a Top-10 defense.

Honestly, New Jersey failed to achieve their overriding aspiration this offseason: to bring in a big gun and give the team more dynamism. Instead, we're on the road of incremental improvement, hoping that the youth step up and make a year-to-year improvement to provide that from within.

New Jersey announces two signings:

The Devils will go into training camp with 9 defensemen on the roster, and will be cutting and waiving 2 of them when the season starts, likely Hunwick and Lovejoy. We'll bury them in the AHL.

Realistically could get away with doing nothing and just replacing parting vets with internal options. With that being said, we are willing to listen to offers that will improve the current club and help us out financially. Players like Ryan Callahan, Alex Killorn, Braydon Coburn, etc. are a bit expensive for what they bring, but play important roles on the team so we aren't going to cripple ourselves in deals to clear salary.

Hedman, Stamkos, Kucherov, Point, Vasilevskiy and McDonagh aren't moving. Sergachev, Palat, Johnson, Miller, Gourde, etc. could conceivably be moved for upgrades, but will likely be retained. Picks and prospects are on the table, but Foote would take a lot.
