Basketball = cheap to play, a truckload of money as a professional

Sure it does. Smaller rosters + the sport is much more popular and brings in way more money = significantly higher NBA salaries.

Hockey being more expensive to get into is a major reason for why it's not as popular as basketball.

And I'm literally typing this on my phone at my kid's basketball practice. I'm damn glad he's not getting to hockey financially.

If you want your kid to potentially have a sports career, hockey is marginally better than basketball. Most people don't have the freakishly-tall genetics or the athletic gifts required to even be a decent NBA or Euroleague player. Sure, you need athletic gifts to play in the NHL or KHL, but you also don't have to be 6'4" +++.
