Dave Koz is good too. If you're old enough to remember your parents listening to soft rock stations in the early to mid 90's you might remember this song

This is my nightmare song.

My parents had on the local smooth jazz station for every dinner. At 7 PM, dinner was on the table and Koz's "You Make Me Smile" on the radio. On. The. Dot.

This would be an appropriate amenity for the Carolina Hurricanes in-game experience.

Do other teams offer healthy options?

Because the last thing I would expect to see if I go out to a game of any team sport would be someone munching on a salad sitting next to me in the stands.

Just seems like the entirely wrong atmosphere.

We offer healthy options. PDQ has grilled options, including salads, the Fire Up Grills have (gluten free) wraps, and the Market Place stands at Sections 126 and 314 are specifically branded as "The Healthy Alternative."

Tell your wives to stop shaving boys!

Also they need some Bo's Kitchen there...odd name for Korean BBQ but it's delicious.

The owner's named Bo Kwon.

You have me sold as long as there are gluten free wraps. So far that seems to be the most popular suggestion amongst the board.

The 3rd period night was as quiet as I can remember PNC. They were basically just playing music to cover the silence, like how you put the radio on during a long road trip when nobody in the car feels like talking. That kind of crypt-like atmosphere has a soul sucking effect on people who stick it out rather than leaving early.

The fundamental issue there is that the team was playing like garbage and the fans checked out. But still, there has to be SOME sort of creative entertainment that can be thrown at the crowd when it gets bad. Even just funny crap on the jumbotron or something.

i think playing highlights of the game could be considered funny crap if you find terrible hockey funny

I feel like they've done that occasionally with the screaming goat and the Rick & Morty screaming sun bits. But they definitely do need to do a little more when it's clear the crowd just isn't into it.

I hate that contrived bullshit so much. They used to do a crowd “noise meter” in Hartford to get everyone to yell. When they did that in a shitfest blowout it got booed, and rightfully so.

It's kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't, though. Do it and you have people complaining about contrived bullshit. Don't do it and you have a dead building with no energy that isn't exactly conducive to bringing people back in the barn. Every team, even good ones, will occasionally get blown out, so it's not just a matter of icing a better team and not having to worry about it.

Some contrived bullshit that isn't just a Jeb Bush-eque "please scream" might help. Show highlights from the glory days- "here, in Canes history moment #23, the full 3 minute broadcast of Jussi Jokinen scoring with .2 seconds left and Brodeur breaking his stick in anger".

You have to give fans something they want to cheer for, not just order them to cheer. Those "make some noise" things always pissed me off too. No, I don't feel like screaming right now. If you want noise, you need to earn it. On the ice is best, but if you've got a snazzy video, whatever. But don't order me to be excited, it ain't gonna work.

And they've essentially been doing that, but towards the beginning of the games, usually around the 2nd TV timeout of the 1st period. Heck, I'd love a return of Ask the Canes, which seems to be no more.

Good for them. Living in DC now, I don't make it to PNC much anymore. Sad to hear about Ask the Canes, those were always fun. The Canesvision group used to have a lot of fun videos of Hurricanes doing random fun things together- Eric Staal and Chad LaRose racing go carts and whatnot. That stuff, along with the Ask the Canes, was a nice way to build a connection to players and make you want to cheer for them even when things are going badly. I also enjoyed the behind the scenes stuff- the HBOish look at prospect camp with the Ryan Murphy series was a great bit of content, but all that seems to have dried up in recent years. Probably cost cutting on PK's part, and it does seem like it could be a good place for Dundon to invest.

You'd think that sort of stuff would be relatively easy to do without a whole lot of money spent on it. For instance, the Bulls have been doing these little vignettes of their top prospects for the last two seasons. The series is called "The Arrival" and generally shows the player's pre-game routine from arrival to the ballpark to right as they take the field. Something like this would be, in my mind, pretty cool for the Canes to do.

I mean, anyone can take HD video from their phone these days. The barrier to entry for something good enough to pop on the web or a jumbotron is pretty low. If you want to make a full on documentary series, you'll want a real camera with decent lenses and a real mic, but this is stuff that any pro sports team has sitting around already. You just need to hire a couple people with the creativity to generate ideas and the ability to edit video. You're not going to match HBO without real investment, but you probably at least want to have a PR department that's not just Mike Smith.

Here's an idea that could happen tomorrow: Video of Hurricanes players singing their favorite warm up song, with the lyrics subtitled. Edit it to 30 seconds or so, play it coming out of one of the TV timeouts in the second or third period. Gets the team looser, gets the crowd looser, and gets people singing along for energy.

Seriously, you get a player for a few takes after practice, maybe 10 minutes of their time, then editing it down to a verse and a chorus and adding words- what, 2 hours of work, being generous? Congrats, players humanized and something that gets fans engaged at key moments.

Exactly. I mean for all of the ability Capitol Broadcasting has, that "The Arrival" series seems ridiculously simply done. No audio and you just have to secure licensing for whatever song you choose to layer over it. Hell, watch The React Channel on YT for a day and that would, I'm sure, generate some ideas.

This is well put. I was trying to figure out why I hate the screaming goat and Rick & Morty clips so much, and this is exactly it.

It's one thing to run a cheap "everybody yell" bit when it's the end of a close game and everyone's going nuts. But doing that when it's 5-1? The effect is:

1) Skate and puck sounds echoing off thousands of empty seats. A dog barks in the distance. A whistle sounds.
2) Out of nowhere... amplified shrieking. Then, a wave of heavy metal washes over the stadium. Human voices are no longer audible from a short distance.
3) The music stops. Gradually, the human ear stops ringing. If you listen closely, you can hear the backup goalie snoring.

It's disconcerting and just awful from an experiential perspective. Nobody cheers, they just sit and wait out the unnecessary blast of volume so that they can go back to their conversation about football. The only thing those clips accomplish is to underscore just HOW quiet it is in the arena, which is even more depressing than if they had just played a Kinetico commercial.

the mish mash of film clip hype videos have lowered in quality over the years. They're just random clips smashed together with no flow or feel. An old one ended with the line from independence day followed by inspirational clips (shot from free willy, for example) always got the crowd revved up.

Maybe I'm just nostalgic.

The rick and morty clip or the goat are just awful.
