Where are these guys playing? Unless you're moving Smith or Staal (or Skjei)

Smith can play the right side. He absolutely can. Staal likely bought out or traded after this season or in two years. But I would say after this season as we load up for EK. That or we trade Skjei/Pionk/ADA as part of a package.

He played very well for us, getting a lot of points on a bad team. Hoping it increased his trade value and we capitalize on a team that missed out on a free agent winger

He's a perimeter player and one year away from becoming a UFA. His salary last year was $2.825 mil--so to sign him we're probably looking at $3.5 mil. He's capable of putting up 50 points if he gets a lot of pwp time. Very slick with the puck. Never really been able to solidify a top 6 role and he's never gotten more than 13 goals in any NHL season. He's a passer/playmaker kind of scorer--something we tend to have more than shooter kind of scorers. He's not going to help your PK. He's not going to be physical. He can go back between center and wing but ideally IMO he's a wing. There's stuff to like but on a thin team that's already pretty soft and with numerous passer/playmakers I don't think he's a good fit with us. More of a vanilla type of forward.

To move forward we are going to have to diversify the type of players we have. We need to get much harder to play against. The Rangers with all their cap space could easily afford to give Spooner the same contract that they just handed out to Namestnikov yesterday. If they decide to do that I would hope they don't try to lock him up for any length of time. IMO he is not going to be part of any solution when the team does start to put it back together. At best he's a place holding player until better options come along.

CDH is an extremely underrated player. If we can rid ourselves of Smith or Staal, our LD for next season looks really, really good.
