It does not matter where we put Sam Bennett, we got sold a lemon, highest pick and he is a lemon.

We have 16 games remaining, a record 10-3-3, I think maybe good enough to get into the playoffs.

It would be one of the more surprising things to happen in the NHL in the past 5 years.

So I am not sure why everyone shouldn't be absolutely shocked if that happened.

Burkie has been here for five years. People have been saying this since 2013. Nice try though.

It is getting less and less likely they make, not having a 1st rounder really hurts.

Would be nice if Gulutzan could get out of his bubble for bit and try

    Tkachuk-Monahan-Gaudreau
    Bennett-Backlund-Frolik

The bottom six will continue to be a disaster that can't change unless they split up Monahan and Gaudreau.

Fire the coaches and yolo the rest of the year with this lineup

    Gaudreau-Backlund-Brouwer
    Tkachuk-Monahan-Frolik
    Bennett-Jankowski-Ferland
    Stajan-Shore-Lazar

In my opinion these are the twelve best forwards the Flames have right now. I really do think Brouwer can contribute if you can actually get him into the offensive zone, he's done it his whole career. Monahan isn't good enough to get himself out of the d-zone, let alone Brouwer as well. No more of this shutdown line bull****, every line is there to score.

Hopefully Shore is as good as he should be

    Controversial opinion time:

Firing the coaches right now would save our season. Change my mind.

I think the simplest reason is that the coach you want long term isn't available right now so bringing in a guy now based mainly on him being available is a bad decision for the small chance they can turn the season around.

Now say you are fine with going a Tippett (only guy i can think of that makes sense for now, future, is available and could possibly do it), then the argument would be that the team is out of the play-offs based on talent and even though GG is a terrible coach the team really isn't any better than the teams that are ahead of them and with so few games left even a big improvement in coaching isn't enough to jump multiple teams with a points and game played advantage right now.

It also looks a little minor league-ish to can a coach this late and with Treliving possibly being on the hot seat if you fire GG now, fire Treliving in the off-season, fire the new guy you just hired so the new GM brings in his guy it starts to look at little chaotic and keystone cops around the Flames organization.

Again, go with Huska right now. As it stands, the odds of making it are slim. See if that sparks the team and find out what you have in Huska.

Bax, why do you always have to post such novels? I’m just teasing you, but as a mod I have to read them all. Go easy on me sir, my reading level is about grade 4.

Those are all very valid points Baxter, and I can’t disagree with them really. However, I think this team is at a point in the season and standings where we don’t have a lot to lose by rolling the dice on the coaches. I’m of the opinion that if we keep the status quo at this point we will miss the postseason.

We don’t have to go out and get a new coach right now, we can replace Gulutzan internally with an interim coach and go after the guy we really want in the offseason.

You’re right that it’d only give us a slim chance of turning thing around, however slim still seems better than our current chances to me.

I agree that yes it would look somewhat amateurish. However, Treliving can’t concern himself with what the media might think of his choices. He simply has to try and make the best moves for the team he is charged with running. I don’t see Treliving as really being in the hot seat yet. I think he probably still has a lot of good will left in the tank, but that’s just speculation on my part.

I didn’t think of an internal coach because I don’t think any of them are any good, but I guess that could be an option.

I think the move should have been made much earlier in the season so I am fine if they do it now I just don’t think it will change anything this late.

Of the most realistic options to coach the team next year I think Tippett and AV are my top choices so if they brought Tippett in now I would be fine with that but I would still expect them to miss.

I’d be good with Tippett and maybe AV. Q would be my top choice as well though, but I think it’s pretty unlikely Chicago let’s him go.

Q is my top choice but I think there is little to no chance that he would come to Calgary.

What would be amateurish is not doing everything you can to make sure the Isles can't draft Dahlin

That would be the single most colossal mistake any franchise has ever made, apart from maybe selling Gretzky. It must be avoided at all costs. It'll be decades of free chirps if it happens.

It wouldn't even be top 50 mistakes. It isn't a mistake since it would have been 100% based on luck if it turned out that way.

And we can't do anything to stop them from drafting Dahlin as that would be 100% due to lottery balls.

You think Gulutzan is frustrating, if Huska was the coach you'd be begging for Gulutzan. Huska has zero ability to adjust lines in game, if a player is hurt, he just usually doesn't play that line anymore. He's more of a slave to his lines and his favorites than Gully is. If Huska has a job in the NHL it should be as an assistant as a defense/PK coach.

It is some sort of a mistake though. For trading a potential lottery pick.

BT cant be blameless for that.

Also he used it to address the team's strength not it's weakest area

It would be on an interm basis and if they do nothing they’re more than likely to miss the playoffs anyways. The main I say him is to go with Huska is to provide a different voice for the players but someone who is very familiar with the system so not much changes. I’ve seen signs multiple times over the last 5-6 games that the players just completely stop playing the system and it has usually resulted in a rash of goals. I don’t mind that Gully took his recent bench minors, but it’s the first time in his career that he’s done it AND he did it in back to back games, suggesting to me that he’s frustrated as heck. The players are also playing undisciplined hockey as a result.

I know you think Cameron would be the guy, I’m not a fan of Cameron at all but I would be in favour of it only because it’s not Gully.

Lastly, despite your feelings on Huska the Flames are very high on him. They have stated so on several occasions. If they feel that he has any headcoaching upside at all (I tend to think they do), now would be the time to take him for a test drive.

The other guy I’ve wanted for years is Dale Hunter.

I’m a big believer that sustained success is largely due to a good coach.

The guy just wins. That’s all he’s ever done. Give him the talent on our roster and I think we would be a great team.
