Funny thing. Nečas means "bad weather" in Czech so Hurricanes are definitely the team for him.

This and as some Carolina fan pointed out, change a bit the word order and from Necas you get Canes. This pick just makes too much sense for Carolina .

Worth noting he is planning to stay in the Czech Republic next year.

plus, I think that's less relevant in this draft class. so many of the top prospects aren't going to be NHL ready. aside from Nico and Nolan, most everyone will get some extra seasoning. there will be a few that surprise in camp, but it's almost certain that guys like Heiskanen will be back in Liiga and he was the 3rd overall pick. in fact, it wouldn't surprise me at all if all the picks after 2nd overall were sent back to their home clubs. I think you could argue for Cody Glass to play for Vegas, but that might be a stretch considering they're unlikely to be competitive. so many more guys than usual at the top of this draft are physically immature projects or mid 99's who will need another year.

I like that these two knew each other beforehand, because I, too was 100% expecting Detroit to draft one of them:

Based on his relentless style of play, defensive ability, and already being good at faceoffs I've read that it seems as though he should be able to stick at center in the NHL.

He's not very good at faceoffs and I wouldn't call his style of play relentless either. However, given his skating ability, vision and two-way play, I also think he should become an NHL center down the road.

Having seen him in a couple of the prospect camp sessions, including the scrimmage, the thing that strikes me is that he's still so physically immature. Long and lanky, like a kid who needs to have a sandwich and hit the weight room.

Given what he's already able to do with that frame, I'm looking forward to seeing him in 3 years or so after he grows into his man-body. If the extra muscle doesn't slow him down, he'll have NHL center written all over him.

BTW, I'd echo the above that the Canes are absolutely ok with him going back to CR for another year. He's not quite ready for the NHL yet, and we're not so desperate to plug a roster hole that we would put him in a position to struggle. Better that he goes home, focuses on his development, and comes back when the Canes are a better team. I have little doubt he'll be in the regular lineup by 2020, the question is whether he's at center or wing, and whether he's a support player or a core piece.

Put him on the Sam Morin diet to beef him up.

By relentless I mean constantly buzzing. Even the draft broadcast described him as something like high-rpm or high-revving player when the Canes picked him. THN and LWOS scouting reports have credited him as being solid in the dot. Not arguing with you, just going off what I've heard.

The buzz around Necas is very reminiscent of the post draft buzz around McAvoy last year. Not necessarily a lot of pre-draft hype but as soon as prospect camp fired up (and for McAvoy the World Junior A challenge) everyone is like "Whoa.....this kid can really play"

Hopefully we get to see him in the World Juniors this December, I'd love to see him in the AHL, or even the CHL but it sounds like that's not in the cards

Couldnt agree more. I called both as well (assuming Necas achieves what i think will be a fantastic choice one of the steals of the draft

Interesting to hear you say that, given he came in at almost the exact same size as Hischier at the combine.

This pick is a steal. This kid have potential to be a franchise player IMO. Sky is the limit for him.

Basically said Bean was going back because there is no ice time available. I think they feel he's close to NHL ready, which would have surprised me before camp started, but not after watching him in camp/pre-season. With Slavin-Faulk, Hanifin-Pesce, Fleury-TVR, and Dhalbeck at the NHL level and Carrick and McKeown at the AHL level, there's just no room at the Inn.
