.385 obp that's entirely dependent on hitting and doesn't walk at a position where offense plays.

.328 obp and 102 wrc+ in 2016. what a stud amirite

his walk rate is a tick above average the past 3 years. he takes his walks when they put him on. 25 bombs each of the last 2 years....

don't act like his bat doesn't play at 1B.

"there's worse players making more"

the padres marketing team can really sell that.

oh, they're a few years away but just gave up significant money in the draft to barely upgrade at first base.

A 102 wRC+ is below average for first baseman.

so then it's good to know that's the 5th highest wrc+ season of his career.

Hosmer is 28 and right in his prime, very possible hasn't seen his best years in the bigs yet. Not like he's 35 or something.

Well, it's also only about a month in. It's possible Hosmer is going to maintain career year pace and will be a better player than many believed..but unless this translates into a division pennant or playoff run for the Padres (and they're in last place at the moment, 11 games back already) it's still a weird signing for that club. It's not like they could flip him for a ton at the deadline either.

It's not that's weird of a signing. They've been awful for a decade. They are probably tired of consistent losing and want to get out of the basement. Hosmer helps with that.

They're in the basement in spite of Hosmer exceeding expectations. They don't really look close to being a contender. I think Hosmer signed with them because no-one else would give him that money, but they're spending a lot on not especially tangible team outcomes.

Why? It expires when hes 36. That's not bad.

As for Hosmer, this was a win-win. He got his championship, now he can rake in the money while playing in good weather.
He was coming off a career year and was probably expected to regress by many.

The length still isn't bad.

Pujols contract was one that as soon as it was signed you knew the length was bad. But at 36 he should still be a serviceable player.
8 years is pretty bad for someone coming off a career year.
