the bart, the
.385 obp that's entirely dependent on hitting and doesn't walk at a position where offense plays.
.328 obp and 102 wrc+ in 2016. what a stud amirite

.385 OBP and 135 wRC+ but he's a scrub amirite
he's actually become underrated. the defensive metrics are a big reason why the nerds and their stats dislike him
102 wRC+ the year before that one.
So, an above average hitter with 25 HR? Still seems like a pretty good player....
Barely above average. Not worth 18/19 mill per.
A 102 wRC+ is below average for first baseman.
"there's worse players making more"
the padres marketing team can really sell that.
oh, they're a few years away but just gave up significant money in the draft to barely upgrade at first base.
that shouldn't have been the concerning part. the concerning part is his contract lengthIt's still early but it appears Hosmer is doing really well for the Padres.
A lot of people thought he would be average or belowthat shouldn't have been the concerning part. the concerning part is his contract length
Well, it's also only about a month in. It's possible Hosmer is going to maintain career year pace and will be a better player than many believed..but unless this translates into a division pennant or playoff run for the Padres (and they're in last place at the moment, 11 games back already) it's still a weird signing for that club. It's not like they could flip him for a ton at the deadline either.

He was coming off a career year and was probably expected to regress by many. Why? It expires when hes 36. That's not bad.
As for Hosmer, this was a win-win. He got his championship, now he can rake in the money while playing in good weather.

8 years is pretty bad for someone coming off a career year. The length still isn't bad.
Pujols contract was one that as soon as it was signed you knew the length was bad. But at 36 he should still be a serviceable player.
