Great deal for the Jet's on the Flashing Dane- the most exciting player on the Jets, and will put up many points. In 3-4 years, this will look like a steal for the Jets. Way to go Chevy !!!

Danish newspaper interview with Ehlers dad about his son's contract and the Jets.

https://www.bt.dk/ishockey/farmand-...lionkontrakt-det-er-surrealistisk-mange-penge

The few interesting points I got out of it:

- He thinks Nik is getting paid a surreal amount of money. He also mentions that it won't change him as a player because he always cared more about winning than what he would make. Nik is more concerned about being a driving force for the Jets.

- He says the Jets are a pretty good offensive team but not amongst the top. They have potential. He thinks they can become a top team with time but that it's difficult because they are in the toughest division. He won't say if he thinks they make the playoffs.

- He talks about the son of a coach dynamics. When Nik was a twelve year old kid and wasn't skating hard and playing well his dad would go a wait for him in the car instead of watching the whole game. He didn't want to be the typical parents who was screaming from the stands. The reporter then asks if he paced him and he says; Yes, but in the good way. If you want to reach your goals you have to work harder than most people and that's exactly what Nik has done.

Could a shorter contract make more sense? 6 years 7.5M AAV or something (I'm new to thinking about contracts). Would open up quite a bit of space for other signings, 6 years to aim for cup, lets Laine cash another big contract.
Rather than leave this just hanging.

Nope, you want to eat up as many UFA years as you can coming out of that ELC with a guy like Laine. Typically a player has 3 years on their ELC then you have four years of RFA status before reaching UFA status. The maximum length of contract is eight years that you can sign any player to. If you sign Laine to a six year deal you eat only two years of that ELC. Maybe Laine decides he doesn't like Winnipeg's direction and once a UFA signs a massive deal elsewhere - that can happen with a six year deal. Signing him to the max (8 years) gives you four years of that UFA status to hold onto. Laine, if he reaches his potential, will indeed get another beauty of a contract given he'll only be 28/29 (ECL 18-20 + max term deal 21-29). You could easily see someone signing him to a six year deal at age 29.

So we need max contract length coming out of ELC and some Chevy contract magic to happen.

After watching Ehlers suffer through the desert last year, I'm ecstatic to see him finishing. And his speed gave the oilers a taste of their own McMedicine.

Chevy must be patting his back about the extension after the 3 goal performance last night

As he should be, it's a fantastic contract that he got signed before game 1 of the season. Great move by Chevy, and love to see Ehlers so committed to the team.

It's just wonderful for Danish hockey to see their product flourishing in the NHL. And with his friendly contract, there isn't much of a chance that the public would turn on him in a hard times.

This guy is an absolute beast and he looks better than ever this season.

So glad Chevy locked him up already, I have a feeling that he is going to look like a $7.5-8 million player after this season. I love his attitude on the ice as well, seems like he is having a genuinely good time.

Man, this Ehler's guy is exciting to watch, and no doubt will be
one of the next big NHL superstars. He's only going to get way
better as he's only 21 years old. Way to go Nik, keep up the great
work, and inspire the team, like the true leader you are.

Love to see Nik finish in the top 10 in scoring in the NHL this year,
and he's only a couple points behind right now !!! looking good !!!

Chevy knows great value for the dollar on players-full marks Chev.

In what has to be one of the last (individual) firsts: Ehler's hat trick in Edmonton was the first hat trick on the road for the Jets 2.0.
