With Hornqvist, the Pens' Power Play is well north of 30%.

Without him, it is well south of 20%.

That's a big loss.

Hmm. I think Couturier is a bigger loss to a depth-starved Flyers team than Hornqvist to the Pens, but we'll see if he's actually out. Both of them, actually. For all I know Sullivan could be playing and Hornqvist could be coaching.

I would agree that he's probably a bigger loss to your overall offensive strength, but the x factor is Hornqvist being such a specialist in his role. If the powerplay for the Pens looks disjointed as hell, and hands momentum to the Flyers with some feeble efforts, that would be a double blow. Of course the obvious counterpoint is losing Couturier on the PK. He seems to be Mr. Everything out there for you shorthanded. And of course having to juggle your top line (I'm assuming Giroux slides over to C and someone else just moves up to wing?

34 PP's is a pretty small sample size. I am sure a PP with Crosby, Malkin, Letang and Kessel would still be very effective even without Hornqvist as long as someone competent takes his spot.

In the 12 games that Hornqvist missed this season, the Pens failed to score a PP goal in 8 of them. And in the other 4 games they scored 1 each.

I think that's significant.

The problem is the Pens have nobody on the roster who can plant themselves in front of the net and disrupt the goalie like Hornqvist can/does. He has a very specific role on the PP that nobody else on the team has the same courage/balls/strength/skill to perform. I'm guessing Brassard and/or Guentzel will take his place, but they aren't the same kind of players.

What I would do is put Schultz in his place and go with 2 d-men. Then have Geno and Kessel play down low more. Schultz's cannon is a weapon... and having him in there gives Letang more freedom to not have to play the center-point as much.

Just my opinion .....

One of the biggest things the playoffs are about is who will step up that hasn't been prominent or as prominent during the regular season

Even without injury thrusting them into a more prominent role

Hornqvist missed Games 2-7 of the ECF last year and Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals

The Penguins went 5-2 in those 7 games

If Hornqvist misses significant time will someone or several someones step up this year? Maybe maybe not, but it's entirely within the realm of possibility that that is what will happen, enough for the Penguins to keep on winning. Also entirely within the realm of possibility that they slump offensively and have a bad time. I think the former is more likely than the latter, the Penguins have been very good (or very lucky) (or both) at getting through injuries in their defense, in net, and up front in the playoffs the 2 previous seasons

Prom Pens official site:

Dominik Simon, who will be looking to make his NHL postseason debut, slotted into his (Horny's) spot alongside Crosby while Jake Guentzel filled in as the net-front presence on the first power-play unit.

Also, Malkin and Phil staying on the same line for game 4

Guentzel-Crosby-Simon
Hagelin-Malkin-Kessel
Sheary-Brassard-Rust
Aston-Reese-Sheahan-Kuhnhackl

Dumoulin-Hunwick (Tang given maintenance day)
Maatta-Schultz
Oleksiak-Ruhwedel

31 is not a very big sample size. It's a loss for sure but as much as I love Horny I don't think he makes our PP go from 12.9 t o 27.9. If we had 229 attempts with and without him I'd expect a smaller difference than what you see there.

Crosby can, he just doesn't do it much in the regular season to avoid injury.

Not sure if this is old news, new news, or a bit of both. Went up less than 20 minutes ago.

Giroux's comment is why I added it. And the video. Looked really painful though.

Looked much worse than I was imagining to be honest.

It does not mean that he is out or even that he will not be 100% for tomorrow, sometimes things look worse than they turn out to be, but that did not look good.

That said, it reminded me of this.

If he did that to one of our players we would be screaming for blood. And expecting the worst.
