In anticipation of tonight's CGY@WPG showdown:
Considering that the Kraken have a mathematically negligible chance of missing the playoffs (<1% according to playoffstatus.com), while the Sabres, Senators, and Red Wings – of making it (3%, <1%, and <1% respectively), both conferences are essentially in a 3-team race for the WC spots.
(1) The 3 Eastern teams are separated by 1 point with no games in hand. The 3 Western teams are separated by 3 points, with the team in the middle having one game less to play. The Eastern race seems way tighter.
Adv: East
(2) However, the 3 Eastern teams are fighting for two spots, while the 3 Western ones are for just one. The cost of each game is higher.
Adv: West
(3) Most importantly, the 3 Eastern teams are done playing each other, while the 3 Western teams all play each other in the next few days. A lot of drama – with the first act about to unfold in a couple of hours.
Adv: West
