No. Brian Lawton went first in 1983. LaFontaine was in the top five, I believe.

I believe Lawton was the first American to go first overall. Others include Mike Modano (1988), Bryan Berard (1995) and Rick DiPietro (2000).

hahaha...you replied just as I removed my post because I realized it was wrong. Lafontaine went #3 overall that year.

1st US college player drafted: Al Karlander, from Michigan Tech was taken by Detroit with the 17th overall pick/2nd round in 1967 (he was the only college player to net a hat trick vs. Ken Dryden).
