In the history of the draft, has there big an American-born player drafter 1st overall? If so, who? If not, which pick was the closest to 1st?

No. Brian Lawton went first in 1983. LaFontaine was in the top five, I believe.

I believe Lawton was the first American to go first overall. Others include Mike Modano (1988), Bryan Berard (1995) and Rick DiPietro (2000).

hahaha...you replied just as I removed my post because I realized it was wrong. Lafontaine went #3 overall that year.
