Skinner doesn't necessarily even need linemates that are really active with the puck all the time. He kinda just needs them to run interference for him, so to speak, and be around the net looking to cash in on the garbage. Honestly, to me, he's a center in all but name. He might not take faceoffs but his overall game is much closer to what you'd expect to see from a center than a winger. I think there's probably a point of diminishing returns on how good a player you want to line up with him; I'm not saying he should play with Nordy/Mcginn type pluggers but I think putting him with somebody like Aho or Staal for instance doesn't allow you to maximize those talents.

Oh, I disagree with this...give Skinner somebody who folks have to start paying attention to (a la Lindholm later in the season) as a line mate and he becomes even more productive. When Rask was scoring early in the season, the same scenario ensued...otherwise defenses collapse on him, frustrating him. Frankly, I think that's one of the reasons his passing has improved...he had no other choice.

Still, I stick to my assertion, give him a big guy and/or a scoring threat on his line and you'll see even more out of Jeff.

Where do I go to pull linemate stats? As in, Skinner's stats with various people.

An invaluable resource.

One that helps you find out that Skinner played 60 minutes with PDG and gave up NINE goals against in that amount of time.

This is such a startling number that I went back to see how it happened. Here's the story:

For about 3 games in mid-December, we were running a line of Skinner-Rask-PDG that got torched for 3 goals in a 4-2 loss. Other than that they played more or less ordinary hockey with the odd GA but nothing that bad. None of their goals against were anything you'd chalk up to the forwards specifically. PDG ended up getting demoted to Charlotte soon after that.

When PDG came back in February, he was placed on a line with Skinner and TT. Again they got torched for 3 goals in a 4-0 loss to the Leafs. The goals against had more to do with a bad line change and atrocious goaltending than anything.

As bad as the numbers look, there looks to be a lot more correlation than causation involved.

Oh yeah I didn't think it meant anything, a sample size that small usually doesn't. The number itself was so staggering to the point of it appearing to be an error. Almost like Ryan's GF/60 being a shade over 1 without Skinner. Woof.
