Once they signed him late last year, Detroit continued to carry 3 goaltenders for the last 4-6 weeks of the season. So they’d have no problem doing it again (at least for around 4-6 weeks again) as they haven’t been using a 23 man roster and have plenty of cap space.

One thing to keep in mind having said that though…..

In January Psysk and Fabbri are both returning and who knows when Vrana is. Also Zadina… So they were already going to have decisions to make and likely need all of those 23 roster spots. Until then though, they can carry 3 goaltenders.

As for the reasoning? With Nedeljkovic not starting a game in the last 4-5 now, maybe there’s a small injury, maybe not. Whatever the case, let’s be honest.. He’s been pretty bad for the Wings this season and Husso has obviously taken that #1 job without much of a fight, after starting the season rotating every game.

Maybe Neds is on his way to the Leafs. It is strange to claim Hellberg even though we know Yzerman likes him. Just wasn’t willing to give another one-way contract after Husso’s arrival, so they signed Jussi Olkinuora instead of Hellberg.. Which was likely the original plan.

The strange part is, they’re already rotating 3 goaltenders in Grand Rapids, using Toledo to get some games in. So they’re not sending Hellberg or Neds down to play. Maybe they think Neds will get claimed and are ready to just move on.

Whatever the case, it would appear Nedeljkovic’s time in Detroit is coming to an end. Whether that’s this week or at the deadline, he’s not getting another contract in Detroit. That’s pretty apparent already, but this seems to confirm it. It would be one thing if they needed the depth right now. They just don’t. So something is going on.

Heard a rumour the league wants Hellberg to get claimed by each team in the league, so every team has been forced to put him on waivers, to give a new team the chance to get him!

I think we're just gonna ride three goalies for the time being. When players starts to return from IR the worst one will be traded/waived and that's that.

Would be kinda funny to us (not to him, of course) if every team that claims him tries to sneak him through waivers to assign him to the AHL just for him to get claimed by Ottawa or Seattle again, then repeat.

Nope Yzerman will keep him for the long road trip in December. We don't have anyone really coming back until January. Even if Soderblom comes back we can send Berggy back down. He's will us at least for the month of December.
