David Perron (draft status, potential etc.)

I really like this guy, I was wondering what everyone else thought of him?

Also where do you think he will get drafted?
Did he perform at the combine? if so how did he do?
What do you think his career potential is?
Who does he compare to? And who do you think he COULD compare too in his prime?

If he slips to late first round, he could be a steal, in my opinion.

I've heard he could get taken anywhere from 10th to even the second round though.

I played against Perron in Midget B 2 years ago. He beated us 7-0 in 2 periods during the semi-finals at Sherbrooke tournament. He had something like 5 goals and 2 assists.

A real joke.

Great stickhandling.

At least I won one faceoff against him. :teach:

i think hes got great skill like everyone said but i think its a risk to take him before the 15-20 mark because theres just something about him that makes me think he wont be a star at the NHL level

I'm going to take major heat for this, but Perron reminds me of a poor man's Crosby. As was mentioned, his puck protection skills are incredible, and he always makes the uncanny pass. He knows where he's putting the puck before he has it.

Is there any chance he slips to Pittsburgh in the 1st round? I think they might pick 20th or something (is that correct?)

I know they may need D, but if Letang and Welch both move up to the NHL will they really need a D man?

I would love to see, Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Letang, Perron, that would be awesome in a few years.

Just a thought although I doubt it will happen.

In my mock draft that appears in the DobberHockey 2007 Prospect Report, I actually have Perron going to the Pens. He's a LW, which they desperately need.

I really hope that happens. My fingers are crossed.

There is no way he goes top 15 for the simple reason that he's an overage player, but he's going 1st round I think.

When you say overage player you don't mean he was an overage player in the Q this year do you? Or are you referring to the fact that he was born in May of 88?

And now I'm wondering was he eligible for the draft last year? Cause the cut off date for last year was Septermber 20 of 88 or something right?

So he just slipped through the cracks?

He wasn't even in the Q last year, which was why he wasn't NHL drafted. Yes, this is his second year eligible.

Welch is in FL -- traded for Roberts ;)

Ahh I didn't know that, thanks.

I guess they do need a Defensemen then. Hopefully they get one in free agency and still take Perron later in the draft.

Any above average D men out there that they might go after?

Yea I know he wasn't in the Q last year, but I figured you could get drafted out of almost any league, Like Turris isn't in the CHL he's in the BCJHL or whatever it is and he'll get drafted, thought it could be the same for Perron.

I guess he was in some midget thing or something, so maybe that's different I dont' know.

So what's the difference between David Perron, and a Robbie Schremp?

Perron's got tremendous speed, and he's a lot smarter.

As for why he wasn't drafted last year, he very well could have been, but no teams scout Quebec Jr. A. That's where a lot of these high re-entry pick play in their draft years- provincial Junior. If a team was really crafty, they'd send a guy around to do only the BCHL, AJHL, SJHL, MJHL, QJAHL and MJAHL.

Martin Nolet was draft in 2006 by the L-A Kings, he was playing JrAAA for Lennoxville the same league Perron was plyaing (St-Jerome)

Another guy (Jason Smith) was also draft from that league in 2003 by the N-J Devils...

There are few scouts for the LHJAAAQ but there is some....I knew St-Jerome was scout that year and it was more for a guy named Robitaille I think... not for Perron...

Perron was good in that league but not that good... There were 3 forwards clearly better than him even touhgt they were older ( Robitaille is just 1 year older)

I agree. He has excellent hockey sense. I watched three of Lewistons games and just fell in love with the guy. He is great at reading the play, and predicting the spots the puck will end up. He has good vision, often knows where his teammates are and where they are going. And he has the skills to stickhandle in tight situations and make an excellent pass. Never once got to see him shoot(a real shot where he actually takes some time to get a good shot a way), which kind of sucks, would of liked to see what he could do with that.

He does not have a hard shot at all, but it is deadly accurate, though to say he has tremendous speed is laughable. His skating stride technically is very strong, and he can turn on a dime, but all out speed is not his forte

Do you think he'd do well on the penguins? Why or why not?

I think in a couple years he could be awesome with Crosby, Malkin, Staal and all the other young talent they have.

Well you would have to see how he does with a couple of seasons in the O, andthen a season or two in Wilkes-Barre. He is still pretty raw, he has a while to go IMO. But with perserverance and determination, I think he has the skill set and mind to make it to the big show.
