Maybe he just doesn't feel like he's ready for the Olympics yet. I'm sure there's plenty of other talent that are probably more deserving to play this year, especially considering once NHLers come back they'll likely never get another chance.

Why would he want to go to these olympics when he could spend that time with the team he actually committed to play for this season? A team that relies on him heavily to lead a ton of young players in a pivotal role; where he still has plenty to learn and who have a lot of work to do if they want to make a real run next season.

Why would he leave that team yet again to participate in a second rate farce of a hockey tournament? Do we get mad at players for not representing their country at the Spengler Cup? So why should we care about this tourney?

Playing in the O-zone and playing in your own D-zone are two completely different areas. I'd take Karlsson in the O-zone 10/10 times if we had the f/o there, but I'd take Vlasic 10/10 times if we had the D-zone f/o.
This opinion is actually incredibly misguided. The best defensive players are the ones who push the puck up the ice consistently, not the ones who can’t deny the opponent access to the d zone but look like they’re trying hard once it’s been swarmed. These things are not unrelated; perceived proficiency in one area is usually a sign of deficiency in the other.

Makar had 7 SOGs in his first game back.

He is currently third among all defensemen in Div I NCAA for SOGs per game. The two ahead of him are seniors and he is the only freshman in the top 10.

Love that he's getting these shots through on net. His ability to walk the line and get a shot off is incredible. It's something that will translate very well to the NHL.

He's the textbook modern defenceman. Not a big wind up just find the lane and something will happen. Also has the elite skating and great transition game to go with it. Can't wait to see him in the NHL.

Probably because the Olympics and the fact that it means nothing to you doesn't make it a farce. Too bad Makar didn't go :(

I give up man, you're not going to get it. Regardless, I would have loved to see him play but so be it.

Chances are, you wouldn't. Makar was going to get the same treatment as he did in the WJC as a #7 PP specialist.

And what if he wasn't? Would you agree that Makar should be on that team then? I find it hard to imagine they would ever ask him if they didn't let him play with his strengths, first in a smaller role and if he succeeds, grant him a bigger role. Ducharme was stubborn man and if Team Canada didn't win gold, his first mistake would have been not playing Makar

damn. dude is slick. I've been beating the drum that Hockey Canada needs to take him to the World Hockey Championships in May to play vs. the men.
