Ovechkin.
I believe being a little older that Alexander is more NHL ready than Crosby. This year, Ovechkin will also get a lot more ice-time than Crosby. Even though Pittsburgh will probably score a lot more goals as a team than Washington, I would still go with Ovechkin.

I would take Crosby in a heart beat...I have seen both play in person and Crosby is above Ovechkin in offensive play...both are equal in defensive play...Ovechkin might be a little bigger than Crosby and be able to hit a bit harder but Crosby in stronger on his skates with a better sense for the game and vision that would blow almost anyone out of the water.

People who see Ovechkin as being more NHL ready just wait till about 30 games into the season.

i prefer crosby but i think ovechkin will out score him because of the 10 more mins of ice time he will recive a game.it kinda sucks cause if crosby out scores him it will be "because of lemeiux" or who ever else he plays with.imo crosby is a better hockey player.but ovechkin will be washington's go to guy and will recive all the power play and regular strength ice time in the world.so it should be close.ovechkin 34-30 -64 pts crosby 22-38 -60 just a guess!

What do you guys think long term career-wise, not just this year.

I have a feeling Crosby will get more points and assists, but Ovechkin could score more goals.

Some of you have seen them both in person more than me, so would you guys agree with this prediction, or do you think Crosby will score more goals?

I see it like this:

Rookie Year:

Alexander Ovechkin GP: 80 G: 37 A: 35 PTS: 72

Sidney Crosby (With Mario) GP: 82 G: 30 A: 65 PTS: 95
Without Mario: GP: 82 G: 25 A: 55 PTS: 80

In about 5 years:

Ovechkin GP: 82 G: 62 A: 45 PTS: 107
Crosby GP: 82 G: 45 A: 100 PTS: 150

People don't really understand how good Sindey really is in seeing the game and understanding what to do and making that happen. Ovechkin can dominate a game with skill...Crosby can control and take over the game with skill.

Call me nuts for what I think Sidney could do in his rookie year but everyone thought I was nuts when I was hyping him as a 14 year old in Dartmouth, everyone thought I was nuts when I said he is the next big superstar...so let me be nuts again then.

Who will score more points in their rookie season?

Sidney Crosby…………..-160

Alexander Ovechkin……+120

I’ll take Crosby -160 simply on the angle that the Penguins will double the offense that the Caps produce this year. Teaming up Sir Sidney with Lemieux and Recchi can’t hurt much either.

From my experience with player vs. player props, (in any sport), the trouble with this type of wager is the possibilty of injury. Providing Crosby stays free of any misfortune, it's hard for me to back Ovechkin with a thin and defensive minded roster like Washington's. Opposing teams will key on his line because there's little else to fear.

AO will get more goals easily, but I think Crosby could get more points playing in a better team.

Personally, I can't really stand most North American players and would love to see AO scoring twice as much as that overhyped almost-American cover boy. But I would be stupid to believe that could actually happen. Unless Crosby gets injured, of course.

PS. I'm not saying that Crosby doesn't have the skills or that Ovechkin isn't overhyped, but I always hate hype and the Crosby-hype went over the limit before it even hit this board.

i could see AO going 60 or 70 points easily. He has been one of the top players in Russian vs NHL stars. He was arguably the best player on Russias MENS team. He is the type of player that is not defined by his teammates, but he defines them. He is the type of player that doenst need a surrounding cast, which is why he will do so well. The disadvantage of playing like AO is that i feel that great linemates will not help him as much as they would crosby (better hockey sense is Crosbys strength, which allows him to benefit more from talented linemates). Both players can do it alone, but Crosby relies on his team more than AO.
i could see sidney crosby going 70-80 points. He is a player that will only benefit from playing with mario, recchi, and maybe palffy.
I will also say that while sid will have more points (and maybe more goals, hes a very underrated goal scorer), i feel AO will have a larger percentage of his teams goals, and he will be a more important player on his team than Crosby will.

I'm going to say Crosby because Lemieux is still one of the top passers/recievers in the league. Ovechkin, on the other hand, might not be far off due to the fact he's pretty much going to be the only thing Washington has going for them(Unless he gets hypothermia from getting 45 minutes of ice time a game)

There are a few players out there for Ovechkin to play with.

No, they're not Mario and Recchi. But they're not horrible either. Semin has a lot of scoring potential, and Zubrus or Cassels are servicable.

Petr Sykora (the other one) was thought to be one of the most talented players not in the NHL (last time there was a NHL)

But, speaking of a broom and dustpan, a broom could score 60 points playing next to Mario.

Bold prediction for Crosby getting 95 points his rookie season even with Super Mario.

Yet AO gets 72 points basically single-handedly for the Capitals.

But you did give AO more goals therefor it is not entirely Crosby-sided.

Playing in every game for Crosby is also a stretch by my estimation, and why -2 for AO?

Percentage of teams goals and points should also be a factor in the ‘better’ category along with unassisted goals and short handed goals.

It would appear that many think AO is capable of a better individual(unassisted) effort and Crosby needs a supporting cast.

In the long run:

Points = Crosby
Player= AO
Goals= AO

In my book assists are nice but goals are supreme.

Q: if the Caps lucked out with the #1 pick, again would both of their statistics(as quoted) increase assuming that they were both on the same line?

Hard to call for their first year but everythign is set for Crosby to have a dynamite season..

Long term, all indications point to Crosby being the better player.

He is better at his age than Ovechkin was, by a sizeable amount.

As for goals, he will porbably score just as many, if not more than AO too...

He has also demonstrated his toughness and his willingness to be a team player. Ovechkin has only shown that a bunch of 17 year olds bumping him is enough to sideline him in an important game...

IMO Ovechkin is better all around right now.I don't thinkSid's defensive game is near Ovechkin's yet.I think AO will get more goals this year,possibly around 30 with assists to match.Sid will be around 20 goals and 40-50 assists,if his supporting cast and himself stay healthy.
