If you've got specific players and it's not someone who's just starting in the league, I can probably answer most of them.

On a related note, if anyone knows where to find this historically, I'd *really* appreciate it.

As far as I can determine there is no publicly available site that shows contract lengths, subsequent years, etc.

The NHLPA website has the current season contracts, as does TSN.

A historical site for NHL salaries going back to 1989 is:
http://www.hockeyzoneplus.com/bizdb/nhl-salaries-search.htm

For example here is Bret Hedican:
Season Salary ($US) / $ Increase / % Inc. / Notes
1989-90 - $
1990-91 - $ - $
1991-92 - $ - $
1992-93 215,000 $ - $
1993-94 235,000 $ 20,000 $ 9%
1994-95 319,000 $ Contract = 550,000 $ 84,000 $ 36% Players' Strike: 48 out of 84 games played. Most players only received +/- 58% of the amount listed.
1995-96 625,000 $ 306,000 $ 96%
1996-97 700,000 $ 75,000 $ 12%
1997-98 850,000 $ 150,000 $ 21%
1998-99 1,050,000 $ 200,000 $ 24%
1999-00 1,400,000 $ 350,000 $ 33%
2000-01 1,712,000 $ 312,000 $ 22%
2001-02 1,812,500 $ 100,500 $ 6%
2002-03 3,200,000 $ 1,387,500 $ 77%
2003-04 3,200,000 $ - $
2004-05 Lockout Complete season lockout: Some players joined various teams in North America and Europe and were paid to do so but none got an NHL salary.
2005-06 2,432,000 $ (768,000) $ -24%
Total 1989-2006 17,750,500 $ Total NHL fortune accumulated from 1989 to 2006

Hope this helps.

USA Today data only goes back to the 00-01 season. But is fairly complete. The hockeyZone site posted a few posts above is a very deep database and good source going back to the late 80's, there used to be a few holes in the data, but they seem to be getting filled recently. In some instances there will be contract data (date signed and length) alongside the salary data.

Google the name Rodney Fort. He is a Sports Economist who has done numerous salary studies for all of the major sports, if you dig enough, you'll find his web page that has many excel spreadsheets for download containing player and league salaries dating back to the early 90's. He even has some stuff from the 60s and 70's I beleive. Some of his data seems to match that of the hockeyZone holes that have been filled over the past year or so. But, I haven't looked at either source much since early last fall.
