I've been comparing the month by month record of the 11/12 Florida Panthers to the 15/16 season. The reason is because I felt the 11/12 Panthers were the best team we had since 2000. That team had chemistry, good goaltending, and solid defence. The 15/16 started off like a bubble team out of a playoff spot but a hot December got them rolling back.

2011 was a make shift team for UFA's and returning guys who stayed loyal to the Panthers like Weiss and Kulikov. Just a bunch of guys Tallon knew could still produce and work hard. I doubt he expected them to do what they did. Plus, Washington had an off year and the division sucked.

This year, Tallon's draft work is leading the way as far as I'm concerned. Jagr, Jussi, Campbell, Lu and Mack are contributing as well. But without guys like Barkov, Ekblad and even Huby, we wouldn't be here right now.

I feel like these are excuses. The 11/12 team was a good team and was consistent. I don't feel that writing them off is fair. I want to see if this current team can be as consistent. If they can thats great and we'll be in the playoffs again.

Apparently you guys forgot how good Flash Weiss Steeg was for us :shakehead

This. Sure they werent controlling the pace like 11-16-68 does, but they were pretty good. What they did back then was amazing, then what happened to them afterwards is a different story, but dont forget that line gave us playoff hockey for the first time in a decade.

I wont forget what they did.

However....they fell off a cliff after a certain point....bad. Versteeg especially, and I liked (still do) the guy.

There was a stretch when Samuelsson - Goc - Bergenheim was better than the Weiss line.

But beyond that top line, Theodore was solid and Soupy played at an all-star level.

But one of the biggest telling stats between this current team and that 2011-12 team....goal differential. They finished at -19. What is it so far right now, + 17?

Also, I like special teams index also as an indicator stat of team success. Their PP was 18.53 and PK of 79.50 for a total of 98.03.

Currently, we stand at 17.97 PP and 80.17 PK....only slightly better, SO FAR.

We will re-visit these stats at the end of the season and we can make a better comparison then.

Flash-Weiss-Steeger were one hit wonder, no comparison to HBJ.

Don't forget that our D-core was really solid in 11-12 (Garrison and Weaver besides Soup).

Mixed with very good goaltending and performing second to forth line plus bad competition, you have a playoff contender.

Our current team is a lot deeper, younger and possesses more potential while facing better competition.

To me we are clearly a lot better today and more promising

Bingo.
The 2011 team was a fun team to watch, but it lacked the talent and depth we have now.

Huge difference is that this year the veterans are actually in the support role and not expected to prop up the kids. Barkov, Ekblad, Huberdeau, Trocheck, etc are leading the way and carrying their own weight on both sides of the ice.
