American Hockey League: The Loveland-based Colorado Eagles of the ECHL are considering a move up a level to become the AHL affiliate of the National Hockey League\'s Colorado Avalanche, possibly as early as the 2018-19. The Colorado Eagles are the current ECHL affiliate of the Avalanche, while the San Antonio Rampage is the current AHL affiliate of the Avalanche. The AHL plans to expand to 31 teams for the 2018-19 season, since the NHL is adding the Vegas Golden Knights as its 31st team for the 2017-18 season. The NHL\'s St. Louis Blues lost its affiliation with the AHL\'s Chicago Wolves, as the Wolves signed on to be the AHL affiliate of the new Vegas Golden Knights starting with the 2017-18 season. The St. Louis Blues will be the only NHL team without its own AHL affiliate in 2017-18. If the Eagles and Avalanche work out an AHL affiliation for 2018-19, the San Antonio Rampage would be available to become the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues.

By the way San Antonio is the last outpost.
The ahl lacks real commitment to this beautiful city. The riverwalk is very beautiful. I just feel it is only a matter of time before the ahl leaves this city. It is a shame
The ahl is a real soap opera even if you disagree , thank you for listening.!! Yes I grew up in the NAHL, the old ihl,the old ahl etc. Does any one remember john brophy and the long island cougars Maine Nordiques(old pro nahl) Utica comets and broome county dusters

Yes, lived in Johnstown and was a Jet fan. Still remember beating Syracuse in the playoffs, before sweeping the Broome Dusters in the finals. Johnstown had been something like 0-58-3 in Syracuse and pulled out a 5-4 win with Steve Carlson scoring the game winner with a little over 2 mins to go in the 3rd period. Should have repeated as champs, but the movie Slap Shot was being made and that distracted the players.

Yes I remember the NAHL well...............

Players were not the most skilled but they gave you what they had, games were exciting and loved the fights......

Back then men were men, and hockey was real hockey..........

Middle of nowhere
You realize all 30 teams playing on the same night was not that common of an occurrence the past couple seasons, right? It happened nine times last season, and only three times in 2015-16.

So an odd number of teams is not an issue at all in that regard.

That's kind of dumb that these leagues take all these weekday dates but weren't all playing on Friday and Saturday nights when the best revenues were possible. These minor leagues need the weekends to survive.

Been saying this since January....it is 100% going to happen exactly like that Colorado will buy 31st team and move them into Loveland and St. Louis will end up in San Antonio

There is more to it that that however. Friday and Saturday nights are also the best night for concerts, kids shows, basketball games, etc, so arenas are often booked. Also, playing the same team on back to back nights isn't always the best for attendance, and teams have to travel and can't always get to the next available city for a game the next night.

Does anyone know what Colorado would have to do get out of their contract with the Rampage, they have what 3 seasons remaining? Is it something as simple like buying it out or can it simply be transferred over to St. Louis. Thanks.

There probably isn't anyone on this forum that can answer that with 100% confidence because it's based on the affiliation agreement itself, which virtually no one outside the two parties has access to.

I will tell you that out clauses are pretty standard in affiliation agreements, so it would be likely one exists in the COL/SA agreement. As for there being one for after the 17-18 season is anyone's guess. There probably isn't a clause that allows a transfer from one NHL team to another, but looking at it logically if Colorado wanted to leave and the Blues and San Antonio want to affiliate with each other all three parties can easily make that happen.

would not be shocked in the least that the Blues will have Husso, Thompson, Dunn, Walman, Kostin, Blais, et al in San Antonio as opposed to Chicago in 17-18. Blues beatwriter hinted at this yesterday on a local STL radio program.

They can continue to be the awful parent club that they have been for the last decade plus, and the Spurs will do what the Cavs did, show them the door.

Colorado may not have to do anything yet, because the onus is on the Eagles.... do they want to move up? and then a proposal has to be written to essentially award Colorado the 31st franchise, then if the above is a 'go', I'd suspect another deal similar to that to what the Eagles are now, ie where does Colorado place their affiliated franchise in the ECHL..., btw, that is what the AHL BOG is expecting for 2018/19

REMEMBER how Kansas City (then Missouri) said they were blindsided by the Blues intention to move them up.... and that went nowhere.

I'D SUSPECT as well that a mutual transition from San Antonio to Colorado might be written in principle to cover the PDC between COL and SSE and allow the Blues to transition in, if they're not already there by now... a 'working agreement'.

Didn't want to start a new thread. Should the AHL re-align? If Colorado goes to the Pacific, how about moving San Antonio and Dallas to the Central and move Cleveland to the East.

You could have just answered the question since you knew what I was asking. Move the two Texas AHL clubs to the Central and move Cleveland to the East. Then you'd have 8 & 8 in the East and 8 & 7 in the West. The two Texas teams and Cleveland would actually be playing the majority of their games in their time zone.

AHL 2018-19 Season | Colorado Eagles

The move for next season is done. Frankly, with a chance that either Reno or Salt Lake (or Fresno) also ends up in the AHL, there’s a question about being a far west team in the E after this season. Rapid City has a decent flight connection to Dallas, so they can hang, but Boise interests have made overtures to the WHL in recent years. The fact that Reno ownership has had a deal with the city re: Reno Events Center for 11 months and has NOT finalized with the E kind of raises a flag or two.
