Wade took paycuts basically his entire time in Miami so Riley could field a championship team. He was consistently one of the most underpaid players and did it that way for Rileys sake. Wade was already washed up in 2016 and he showed that in Chicago the following season.
Sure. But let's not act like there isn't a trade off of sorts there. They both got what they wanted out of it. Wade got rings and Riley got money to play with.

they just got young, controllable players....what are you talking about?

It just seems like this entire season, from Kyrie wanting out and the ensuing fallout from that deal, to LeBron fabricating that whole "he might sign in Golden State" story, this has all been about LeBron's inevitable departure from the team. And for the past month or so you can't argue that it hasn't affected their on the court play.

Their own GM likened it to a "death march".

Will they climb back up the standings with these new players slotted in? Who knows.

But I wouldn't bet on them to make it out of the East.

Hence, they're worse off than they were last season, and losing LeBron this summer will hurt as well.

Not denying that but when it came to a time where Wade could finally be paid right, Riley did his typical bs and balked at that. Offered him something stupid, believe it was 10-12 million per year - this was the summer when the cap exploded so that was a super low ball.

Heat offered Wade two years, $40M but he wanted either a longer deal or more than $20M/yr. Heat wouldn't go for that so he took the Bulls offer of two years, $47M.

Sources: Heat offer Wade 2-year, $40M contract

Both sides were at fault for the break-up and it hasn't gone too well for either one of them since. Wade's last 1.5 years have mostly been a disaster. Maybe not so much on the court but definitely off of it. The Heat avoided overpaying an aging Wade but then they went and overpaid T. Johnson, J. Johnson, and Waiters so they screwed up their cap anyways.

I remember reports at the time said their original offer was something like 12 million and only improved it when the Bulls blew theirs out of the water. But the damage was done at that point and Wade felt slighted.

I don't think it would have been much of an overpay given how much lesser players were getting and his one season in Chicago went OK. It was just an unnecessary burning of bridges but Mrs. Wade seems to prefer Miami winters over NE Ohio winters :naughty:

Spend so long in one place I can see why. Especially when your time there had been very successful. Riley finally had the balls to bring him back (more likely Arison wanted him back)

He never wanted to leave but by the time Miami upped their offer, the damage was done and the lure of playing at home was too much.
