Eklund stoking the Hanifin rumors today. Probably reading our threads.

Only an idiot would trade Noah Hanifin.

I say that desperately wanting RoR on this team. I would not trade Hanifin for that or really anyone rumored to be possibly available.

We only have two players currently playing that have potential to be special more than we’ve seen. Aho and Hanifin. I lean a little more to Hanifin. Just has that “it” and that little bit of swagger. I hope he loves the Canes and wants to stay.
Funny how his quoted source comments always read with the exact same style.

I wouldn't trade Hanifin for ROR either but I'm not on high on him as some either. Sure, still room to develop and grow but something about his hockey IQ still seems missing to me.

In a 6-5 win where the Canes score a powerplay goal, Hanifin and TVR are somehow on the ice for all five even strength goals for a 0 even strength goals against. That is nuts.
Another oddity to add into the nuts column is Rask getting two assists. Seriously though he finally seems to be playing better. Looked really good and confident on those late draws he won.

I go back and forth on that. Offensively, his IQ is really starting to show right now. His instincts of when/where to jump into a play, looking for the lanes, looking for the open guy, etc...is really becoming a strong point. I didn't expect that when he was drafted based on what all the scouts said. Defensively, he's not on Slavin's level (but not many are), but he is continuously improving IMO. It might be a case where he was just so damn talented as a youngster, that he got buy on skill alone and is realizing it isn't that way in the NHL.

Probably the biggest change I see is confidence. When he has the puck, he is now so confident with it and when he is skating with the puck, I'm more comfortable with him than probably anyone. Yeah, he still makes mistakes (like in the Caps game), but I think his game is improving in leaps and bounds. Remains to be seen how far he can go, but I think it's in there.

I think the knocks on Hanifin's hockey IQ are because he's a complete Chad. I've seen nothing but progress from him in that regard. There are very few C's I'd trade him for at this point; ROR is definitely not one.

As far as the game goes, that was fun as hell. I was laughing constantly. There needs to be more games like that at home.

Hanifin still makes too many terrible defensive mistakes that hang the goalies out to dry. Globally he seems to be getting better, but from my view he is still well below average for a top-4 guy. The entire defense has been worse-off defensively this year (really since Hainsey left) while Hanifin has improved, so at least he is moving in the right direction.

Thankfully, offensively Hanifin has developed into something pretty special. His reads in the offensive zone have become more refined with experience to the point where they are now dangerous. He makes a lot of heady offensive plays at full speed. He is one of the only guys on the team which adds a dynamic which isn't "pass, dust it off, pass, dust it off, dust it off, vacuum the living room, shoot into goalie's crest".

It’s easy to look at a 20 year old defenseman and see hockey IQ issues.

Gotta remember that someday he’ll be a 30 year old with over a decade of experience under his belt. And even if he still makes the occasional goof at that point, that makes him no different than a Subban or Doughty or Burns.

IMO, unless someone is offering a franchise-changing player you keep a defenseman like that and build around him long term. It’s WAY too hard to find that guy in the draft.

I would trade Hanifin for an elite goalie also. A true 1C would be nice but an elite goalie would be better.

No f-ing way! That is crazy. Goalies numbers and psyche are too tied up in who is in front of them...they can go from incredible to dog meat in less than a season. Keep Hanifin unless it is a sure thing, young #1 scoring center.

Pesce and Fleury don’t have the skill set to generate points, period.

Slavin’s got better handles than he usually shows, but he’s not asked to play that role for us. Until we ask him to be a true #1D model of player, I don’t see points coming for him.

Faulk is on a hellacious slump.

That leaves Hanifin and TVR, good offensive defensemen. But they’re playing with those other 4 guys, so...

IMO this has a lot more to do with the fact that our forwards are dog food. Defensemen who pass to good scorers tend to get points just fine.

Yeah, I think he was going more towards the comparison of us as Nashville east which i have seen mentioned.

I wonder if Faulk was tracking regularly in points where it would put our D. Obviously not close to Nashville still, I know that but I would think it would have to be more middle of the road

Also - I know Slavin isn't asked to play this role for us but he still had 34 points last year and I don't believe his role has changed from last year to this year. he's currently on pace for 26

Also, Cory mentioning Fleury is a bit odd though when you look at usage. If you look at points/60 5 vs. 5, here's how the Canes defense ranks:

1) Hanifin: 1.33
2) TVR: 0.81
3) Pesce: 0.68
4) Fleury: 0.62
5) Slavin: 0.48
6) Faulk: 0.35
7) Dhalbeck: 0.26

Last year:
1) Slavin: 1.04
2) Faulk: 0.82
3) Hanifin: 0.74
4) Pesce: 0.71
5) Dhalbeck: 0.64
6) Hainsey: 0.53
7) Tennyson: 0.52

Two guys really stand out in terms of dropping off this season and tell me that Fleury isn't the issue.

I mean, if the team's gonna play like **** that's at least an entertaining way to do it.

My kids were watching and texting me and we all had that same reaction....insane, but entertaining....and as long as we kept putting up that go ahead goal a minute after the tying goal....well and as long as my heart can take it....
