Bruins fan going for Matthews. Just a better all around player IMO. Also makes sense to take him off a division rival...

Legitimately not sure. Matthews will have a more rounded game in addition to being an elite scorer. Laine has potential to go down as one of the greatest scorers of all time. That is a tough one. Leaning toward Laine but could easily change tomorrow

I just happen to be a part time Carolina, Boston, Montreal, Washington and NYR fan (what a coincidence, I know:sarcasm:) and I think I would take Matthews AINEC.

Please don't stoop down to their level.

If you look at Boston's on ice product and prospect depth, its Matthews easily. If starting a team from scratch I would have to think long and hard, but for the Bruins, long term #1C is the only hole they have.

I'd take Matthews because we so desperately need a center. But I do think Laine is the kind of player that can alter a franchise completely (like Ovechkin) which to me puts him slightly ahead of Matthews.

As a caps fan I'd take Laine, we have Backstrom, Kuznetsov, and Eller down the middle but only Ovechkin and a bunch of question marks on the wings.

There was discussion if any GMs would take Laine over Matthews and those rose teams rose up as likely candidates. So the context was if there really would be no GM to take Laine over Matthews and need vs the more valuable position.
Don't bother with certain Leafs fans.

Caps fan saying flip a coin. Love both those players and they’re so young I think positional needs are a small consideration in the big scheme of things.

It’s a tie imo.

Having Ovechkin is the exact reason why I wouldn't take Laine. He makes Laine redundant. If we had Matthews, we could play Kuznetsov on the wing and it would give us more speed there.

why would he make Laine redundant? you can't have 2 snipers? and if you can't, that's a big part of Matthews game as well.

There's only enough powerplay time for one elite sniper with Washington's PP setup. I'd take Matthews and then probably switch Kuznetsov to wing (or trade Backstrom for a young winger/young defenseman +).

You can't have both of them play at the top of the left circle on the PP. Laine leads the league in PP goals and he makes his living in the Ovi spot. Matthews is a left handed sniper, something we don't have at all on the Caps.

what do you think Oshie and Carlsons roles on the PP are?

Using Laine or Ovi at these spots is a waste of their talent.

It worked very well for Oshie and Brouwer, Laine or Ovechkin in that spot would get 15 power play goals a year easily.

And if PP is your concern than Matthews is not your guy, he's not nearly as good as Laine on the PP, he has 2 PPGs this year. He'd be on the 2nd unit behind Backstrom and Kuznetsov.
