And that's why you don't fire a good GM and then temporarily replace him with an idiot that put your team down in the dumps to begin with and gave out bad contracts.

Holy dog dicks. And to think I was elated when they got rid of that cheap bastard Gettleman. This is an outrage.

And so what if Benjamin was going to be an FA? Pay that man his money. A 3rd and 7th round pick? When the team is a game out of 1st place??

trading KB makes sense conceptually, but you've got a team in position for the playoffs and he's clearly the most formidable receiving threat. how do you sell this to the team? you expect this to help the playoff push?

I could see if they maybe got something useful for him, like, IDK an offensive lineman who can actually block.

There will be no playoffs now, just like there was no Superbowl victory after getting rid of Steve Smith for no reason.

This is confusing, are we sure Dave Gettleman didn't just get re-hired an hour ago?
I've always thought Gettleman was pretty smart and had the team going in the right direction and always avoided overpaying at positions that aren't vital to the team. He certainly wouldn't of traded Benjamin for a sandwich considering the Bills can still have him for another year with the option.

You traded your #1 WR for a 3rd and a 7th and didn't get better.

This might be the final straw on this franchise for me until Richardson dies. I was pissed at letting Norman walk, I was pissed they never got OL help for Cam. I was pissed they let Beane walk only to fire Gettleman 3 weeks later, and I was pissed when Hurney came back. But now giving away your top receiver for a bag of pucks to the damn Bills? Yeah, I need to take a long break from this franchise. They have seemingly gone out of their own way to actively throw away all the goodwill they built up in 2015.

Norman was going to cripple our cap space with his salary anyway and with the injuries we had last year we wouldn't of made the playoffs regardless with how bad our offense was and Kuechly missing so many games. This is by far the worst as Benjamin was our leading receiver and the only WR that is actually ahead of McCaffrey( RB) in yards. This opening the game up for other receivers argument is stupid, yeah we opened them up by giving away our best WR...sure he isn't that great but he was still our best one on the roster and now we are stuck with Funchess as our #1 option???

A lot of Canes fans are complaining about how Francis is afraid to pull the trigger. Well I'm thankful Francis doesn't make absolutely awful trades like this. So while it's frustrating for us Canes fans, it could be worse.
People want Francis to make a move to add talent and improve the active roster. That would be pretty much exactly the opposite of what was accomplished by Hurney yesterday.

Apples and oranges.

I don't follow the Panthers all that closely, so I definitely don't understand this. I saw one person say that it's essentially because he and Funchess fill the same role and they need more speed guys to fill out the WR core? I never understand NFL trades anyway, but this seems exceptionally odd.

I don't get it at all. I mean I understand if they didn't think that Benjamin was in their future plans... but come on, he was their #1 receiver, and helped create mismatches all over the field. With Olsen ready to come back, defenses wouldn't have been able to double him, and he should have been able to get monster production the rest of the way. Instead, they give him away for pennies. A former 1st rounder on his rookie contract who was the leading receiver on the team and preferred target of his QB gets sold for a 3rd and a 7th. What. The. Hell.

And don't get me started on the "but the Panthers made the Super Bowl without him" arguments. You know what the Panthers also had that year? An Offensive Line that consistently gave Cam time to throw and make his progressions to find the open guy. We don't have that, and after yesterday, we still don't have that. We have a crap OL and now we're actively taking away talented targets for Cam. Its almost as if the ownership is setting everything up for Cam to fail, which is ridiculous after the contract they just gave him. Whereas other contenders (NE every offseason, Philly yesterday, etc) are loading up the talent around the QB to make them better, the Panthers seem to be actively cutting Cam off at the knees. It just simply doesn't make sense, unless we're about to see them blow the whole thing up.

NFL trades are interesting. #1 receiver for a 3rd. A top young running back for a 4th. One of the best LT in the game for a 2019 2nd. Doesn't seem to cost that much to vastly upgrade any one position. I suppose that is a function of having 15 or so important positions instead of just forward, defense, and goalie.

Hurney's comment indicates he wants Cam to be better protected. Interesting that he went with an addition by subtraction approach instead of just upgrading the O-line but I guess that's why he gets paid the if bucks. Getting Curtis Samuel and McCaffrey more involved should crank up the speed and allow Newton to get the ball out faster.

Also a function of drafting 22 and 23 year olds instead of 18 year olds.

Probably also a function of the longevity of players in the NFL vs. the NHL. I'm not sure I'd ever re-sign a running back to a second contract given how quickly they decline and how many productive ones can be found in the middle rounds. Other positions are quite as bad as RB, but not too far off. Only the QB has and a few lineman have long term worth.

Maybe its just me, but I'm struggling to see how getting rid of his pressure valve receiver helps protect Cam behing a terrible OL that he did nothing to improve upon. But I guess moves like this is why his 'interim' label was just extended through 2018 Free Agency and the Draft...

Getting Curtis Samuel and McCaffrey more involved should crank up the speed and allow Newton to get the ball out faster.

The thing is, they could have been more involved without shipping away the matchup nightmare that Benjamin presented. Even if he didn't catch anything, he was still commanding a double team on most plays, which should have made getting Samual and CMC more involved a little easier. This kind of move just screams that Shula has no clue what he's doing, and instead of making the move to fire him, they take away some of his toys to keep him more focused. Its almost like the franchise has decided its not making any more coaching or front office moves until Richardson dies and the team is sold.
