Big deal. I’m sure he know the obsessive Toronto media is on the prowl. Captain material from a what 20 year old? Nothing here.

he was probably pissed off, which is fine. not being a difference maker in the game was much worse, but hopefully he brings it in the next one

The Toronto media is the worse in the league but that doesn't give Matthews an excuse to go invisible in front of media. Unless Bergeron is defending the media room of course.

Seriously though, the Leafs would be smart to assess Austons character before anointing him the franchise centrepiece for the next 10 years. Character issues have killed many a franchise talent before. And even though Matthews is a great talent (top 5 shot in the league) you don't win without your leaders leading. Tonight Austin showed that he's not a leader, leaders don't run when things get tough.

Matthews has never shown anything to suggest he's captain material, so I don't really see why he should be held to such a high standard.

He’s their best player, so you know he’ll get the C one day. That doesn’t necessarily make him right for it though.

What's your excuse?
Not sure why NHL players avoid the media.

Launch a few cliches, drop your standard lines, dust off your hands and walk away. EZPZ

Even if a reporter pushes you, just answer the same.

"y'know, we just gotta, y'know Get pucks on net, y'know, Gotta be more physical, y'know"

This isn't to crap on Matthews it's a league-wide thing.

I don't know. Hyman has out played, out worked, and out lead Matthews so far these playoffs. But yeh who's to argue with the anointed Generational one that he shouldn't be Captain. Hopefully one day, Matthews isn't too disappointed to talk to a Referee about a bad call as Captain.

Have you met the hockey media in Toronto? A pack of rabid diseased raccoons would have more decorum and tact.

Racoons can bite my friend. Remember those park signs that say "Do Not feed Wild Animals?", well Matthews just gave them some free bait.

It’s fine to not speak to the media if you have a monster game next game, through a morale perspective.

But if you view media as an obligation and part of the job however, it does show a lack of something to not address it. Whether that “something” is captain material or not is up to debate.

Hopefully we see him bounce back with a good game and make this series more interesting.

Toughest market to play in if you're a private reserved type personality. In the NBA and NFL kids in their young teens are beginning to get media spotlight on them, then major media spotlight when they go to Division 1 NCAA schools. Nobody pays much attention to young hockey players, even CHL players only have a handful of small town beat reporters covering them. For Matthews he had absolutely zero experience dealing with the media until shortly before the draft. This new management team has done a good job of shielding their players from the Toronto media mob but it's impossible to completely shield them. I guarantee you that if the Leafs lose this series Matthews will be out shopping, out for dinner, and will hear idiots calling him a loser, momma's boy and worse. This happens to Maple Leaf hockey players, always has, Wendel Clark had to deal with a ton of gay **** thrown at him based on rumors that were rampant in Toronto, unsubstantiated rumors but that doesn't mean anything to the type of person who does this kind of harassment. Wendel was a tough guy, he could handle it. If things don't go well in Toronto for the team and Matthews this could become a real issue. It's no secret that many NHL stars don't want to be Maple Leafs, they love the city, many of them summer there or nearby, but word gets around. NHL players love playing in the American cities where they get some attention but still retain their anonymity pretty much when they are out and about.
