Johansen played Djios out. The other opponent for second-pair spot is Ness, who also showed quite solid game and maybe Siegentaler.

Let's see if Graovach can do this in a couple more games. He looked good, he looked fast, he looked motivated.

He also couldn't make a good pass and couldn't finish two glorious chances.

Boring game tonight was boring. The most exciting stuff happened when the Caps were shorthanded.

If Carlson and Burakovsky were fighting for roster spots i think they would be cut after this game. Carlson might have been cut already after his first game.

Very underwhelming from the guys fighting for those spots. Graovac looked solid though, as did Walker before. DSP should be sent down. Maybe have Peluso sitting in the press box and throw him out there against certain teams and give some more ice to Ovechkin and the other top wingers. Honestly no idea why Peluso is in the line-up against these teams that aren't dressing a heavyweight. He has a certain reputation and most of the league knows to stay within a certain distance away from him. He's not going to impress you with his hockey skills.

Same old ****, then.

When you're a "work ethic", veteran-heavy coach and you're complaining to the press you can't get the guys to work hard, at the end of your contract, with a lot of young players likely getting time, it's not a good look.

Orlov and Niskanen are looking at getting 30 minutes a night at this rate.

Losing Schmidt looks worse and worse every day.

He should probably ***** less and focus more on timing and cohesion, which have been garbage. Do the underlying things well which already assume work ethic and engagement and then you've established a foundation and can more easily maintain accountability. The focus starts way before they get on the ice. More nebulously referring to work ethic doesn't help them on a team level. There are a lot of players moving around and in/out of the lineup of course but what's the identity?

It doesn't help that they have poor organizational depth and to have oversold the blueline prospects and he's not wrong to call out some players to start leading by example but he never seems to fully have the conceptual approach down either. He seems to attack a mere symptom of a deeper problem of his making. He gives them a lot of freedom offensively when, frankly, they just don't deserve it and it doesn't make them better. It just allows them to maintain confidence in the same old approach and so of course it becomes a battle against complacency.
